On the wall in my mother’s bedroom there was a photo, which showed a soldier with a gun. Below the photo was the word “Speaking”.
“Who’s that soldier called Speaking?” I asked one day.
“He was Harold.” She said. “He was my only brother. When the Second World War began, Harold was eighteen. I was twelve then, and my sisters were ten and nine”.
“Harold liked to play with us, and we often quarreled. When we quarreled, we said:We’re not speaking to you. But before long we were all happy again, and then we said: I’m speaking now. Are you speaking to me?”
“When the war broke out, Harold joined the army. A month later, he came to see us. He brought the gun to show us. Then he went miles away to the war. We didn’t see him for three years, three long, empty years. We didn’t often hear from him. But one day in May there was a loud bang(砰)on the front door…”
“I ran to open it. It was Harold! He was an old Harold, a thinner Harold. He looked at me with his two green eyes and smiled. That smile was just the same as before, then he said one word: ‘speaking’”.
“I didn’t…I couldn’t…answer. I just fell into his arms and he dropped his gun. He stayed with us for a month. We played all our old games again. Then he went back to the war, and never came back again. So I wrote the word on the photo.”

Before the invention of agriculture men were hunters. They went out every day. Sometimes they killed animals—sometimes animals killed them. Life was difficult and dangerous. Women had to go out every day, too. They collected roots, fruit and grass. Then , one day, more than 10,000years ago, a woman dropped some grass seeds. She dropped them near her home in the Middle East. They grew—and the first wheat was born. The idea grew, too . Women planted roots and fruit trees. Then they could stay at home and look after the children—and the animals. Women liked baby animals: dogs, cows sheep and goats .That idea grew, too. Then their husband did not have to go hunting for meat. They stayed at home. They built villages and cities. Men began civilization—after women invented agriculture.

Last year I was on holiday there. Riding along a road one sunny morning, I found the air above me suddenly became thick with bees. Although it was hot, I went cold all over. To run away fast seemed the only thing to do, but my horse was frightened, too. He jumped and kicked out in all directions to get rid of the bees that were attacking him, and then threw me to the ground.
The village was about half a mile away. I began to run. But by now I was covered from head to foot with bees. They crawled all over me, stinging (刺) with terrible pain. I tore them away, but made room for others. Each time I opened my lips for breath, more bees entered my mouth. I could hardly breathe.
Then I reached the village. I ran towards a house that was being built. As soon as the men working there saw the bees, they ran for safety at top speed.
My eyes had completely closed. I fell into a pile of something soft. I pushed myself down into this until my head and shoulders were covered. This made bees angry and they began to attack my legs. I struggled but soon became tired out. The bees had won.
At last I was saved by two clever soldiers. They ran to a pile of dry grass and quickly surrounded me with a thick wall of fire and smoke until the bees were driven away. They remained with me, I later learned, looking after me for the next three hours until a doctor was found and brought.

Most people have heard of Shakespeare and probably know something of the plays that he wrote. However, not everybody knows much about the life of this remarkable man, except perhaps that he was born in the market town of Stratford-upon-Avon and that he married a woman called Anne Hathaway. We know nothing of his school life. We do not know, for example, how long it lasted, but we presume(推測(cè))that he attended the local grammar school, where the principal subject taught was Latin.
Nothing certain is known of what he did between the time he left school and his departure(出發(fā))for London. According to a local legend, he was beaten and even put in prison for stealing rabbits and deer from the estate of neighbouring landowner, Sir Thomas Lucy. It is said that because of this he was forced to run away from his native place. A different legend says that he was apprenticed(做學(xué)徒)to a Stratford butcher, but did not like the life and for this reason decided to leave Stratford.
Whatever caused him to leave the town of his birth, the world can be grateful that he did so. What is certain is that he set his foot on the road to fame when he arrived in London. It is said that at first he was without money or friends there, but that he earned a little by taking care of the horses of the gentleman who attended the plays at the theatre. They stopped and spoke to him. They found his conversations so brilliant(有才氣的)that finally he was invited to join their company.
( )42. In the early life of Shakespeare, he_______.
A. attended a public school B. lived in London C. studied Latin D. was put in prison
( )43. Why was he forced to leave his native place according to this passage?
A. Because he didn’t want to go to school.B. Because he left for London to become famous.
C. Because he had stolen deer and was beaten. D. No one knows for certain.
( )44.What does the underlined word “l(fā)egend”mean in Chinese?
A.小說(shuō) B.傳說(shuō) C.童話(huà) D.自傳
( )45. What is the reason why the world can be grateful?
A. He wrote many world-famous plays. B. He was an actor.
C. He lived a hard life. D. He liked to travel all over the world.

五、任務(wù)型閱讀 (共 10 空;每空 1 分,計(jì)10 分) Xk b1.C om 閱讀下列短文,根據(jù)短文中的信息完成文后表格。 (每空一詞) It’s never too late to right your wrongs, big or small.
Working as hard as I have been over the years, I have become disconnected from(失去聯(lián)系的)the people who matter most to me. I decide to spend a year reconnecting(重新聯(lián)系) with my friends and relatives and making amends(補(bǔ)償). I devote myself to caring for what I call “my unfinished business”, which has helped me become a more attentive husband, father, son and friend —and a happier, more energetic person.
Now that I’ve had a good chance to revisit my past mistakes—and experience the rewards of fixing them—I’d like to share some of the lessons I have learned:
Have you lost touch with people who were important to you? Are there things you’ve done or not done that are in front of you? Are there people in your life you don’t know how much they meant to you? List your unfinished business and take action to deal with it.
Instead of trying to put an end to the cold war dividing your family, begin with a small thing you can control. Apologize to your brother for not attending his Super Bowl party. Reply to an e-mail you should have answered a week ago. Write a note or make a call.
No matter what the wrong is, the vey important thing to making it right is your sincerity(真誠(chéng)). If you reach out with a genuine(真誠(chéng)的)heart, your friends will be glad to hear from you again.
This is the key to learning and growing. Keep a journal, or summarize what you’ve learned in e-mails to friends. The difficulty we face in dealing with our unfinished business can seem impossibly big, but the first step to clearing them can be simple: Again, write a note or make a phone call .Once you discover your fears and get over them, you’ll become a more complete and pleased person.
