If you spend some time in an English-speaking country, you might hear the term “etiquette”. It means normal and polite social behavior. This may seem like a difficult word at first, 51 it can be very useful to understand.
Etiquette is not the same in every culture or in every situation. For example, standing very 52 the person you are talking with is quite common in some Asian countries. However, if you do this in Europe, some people might feel uncomfortable. Even in China, we all know that etiquette is not the same in all situations. Perhaps we think that talking 53 in our homes is fine, but there are 54 places where is not allowed. For example, most people would agree that talking loudly in a library, a museum, or a movie theater is 55 . Even if you are with your friends, it is better to keep your voice 56 in public places. In fact, we should also take care not to cough or sneeze loudly in public.
If we see someone 57 the rules of etiquette, we may politely give them some 58 . Perhaps one of the most polite ways is to ask someone, Would you mind doing this or Would you mind not doing that. For example, if someone cuts in front of you in a line, you could ask them, Sorry, would you mind joining the line? If someone is smoking on the bus, you could ask, Excuse me, could you please 59 that cigarette? People don’t usually like to be criticized, so we have to be careful about 60 we do this.
Although rules of etiquette can often be different, some rules are the same almost everywhere in the world! For example, dropping litter is almost never allowed. If you see someone you know doing this, you can ask them, Would you mind picking it up?

Dear Jack
Thanks for sending me the snow globe of the monster. I love it. In fact I think it’s probably my favorite. I’ve been collecting snow globes for seven years, and now I have 226 of them. My mom says I have to stop, because we’ve run out of room to store them. They’re all around our apartment. I even store them in boxes under my bed. The first one I ever got was a birthday cake snow globe on my seventh birthday. I particularly love globes with animals. I have a big one with bears in it and another one with penguins. My name is Leo. I’m from Australia, and I’ve been teaching in China for two years. I teach in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province. This is an interesting city with a very colorful history. There is some European influence in the city, and some of the old buildings in Harbin are in Russian style.
Since I came to China, I’ve been learning a lot about my family history. Although I’m Australian, my family is Jewish. So it was very interesting for me to learn that a lot of Jews came to live in Harbin many years ago. My parents were so surprised when I told them about this. In fact, the first Jews probably came to Kaifeng more than a thousand years ago and were welcomed by the Song Emperor.
When I lived in Australia, I studied history at school but we usually studied Australian or western history. However, when I heard that I was going to work in China, I started studying Chinese history. I’ve been studying for over two years now. My friends in Australia said that Chinese history was very hard to understand, but I don’t really agree. I think if you study hard, you’ll be able to understand any culture. For a foreigner like me, the more I learn about Chinese history, the more I enjoy living in China.
And although I lived quite far from Beijing, I’m certain I will be there for the Olympic Games in 2008!
