詞語用法:
instead一般與of連用作為介詞詞組，后面可接名詞和代詞意外的詞，如形容詞，副詞，動(dòng)詞和介詞。
Things are now better instead of worse.
He walks slowly instead of quickly.
That increased instead of decreased our anxiety.
注意instead of和without的區(qū)別，兩者不要混用。一般情況下，用人，事，行為去代替另外的人，事，或行為時(shí)，用instead of。表示人，事，行為不和其他的一起時(shí)，用without。
I'll have tea instead of coffee, please.
我要喝茶而不是咖啡，謝謝。
She often goes swimming without telling her mother.
她經(jīng)常沒有告訴于她媽媽就去游泳了。
instead 可以是形容詞，一般放于句首或句尾。

adv.(副詞)
instead是副詞,只能單獨(dú)使用�；疽馑际恰按妗�,可依據(jù)上下文靈活翻譯,有時(shí)甚至干脆不譯。
instead可位于句首,連接上下句。通常是上句先否定一種情況,再以instead引出下句,提出相反的情況。
instead也可位于句末,可用于兩個(gè)獨(dú)立的句子,也可用于并列句的后一句中,還可用于帶有狀語從句的主句中,這時(shí)常譯為“反之”,“相反”。
instead of是短語介詞,其后可接名詞、代詞、動(dòng)名詞,有時(shí)也可接形容詞、動(dòng)詞不定式、介詞短語等。instead of前后兩部分的意思一般是一正一反,可靈活譯為“(用…)代替…”“(是…)而不是…”“并非”“反而”等。
一般認(rèn)為動(dòng)詞不定式和形容詞不能作介詞賓語,所以可以把“instead of+ adj. /to- v ”看作是of之后省略了being或其他 v -ing形式的動(dòng)詞。例如:He walks slowly instead of (walking) quickly.他走路緩慢,而不快速。Why don't we stay home and watch television instead of (being) to go to the cinema?我們?yōu)槭裁床淮粼诩依锟措娨暥タ措娪澳?
用作副詞 (adv.) I gave him advice instead of money.
我給了他忠告，而不是錢。
I made this cake specially, with brown sugar instead of white.
我特別地以紅糖代替白糖做了這個(gè)蛋糕。
We shouldn't look down upon them, instead we should try to help them and take more care of them.
我們不僅不該歧視他們,反而更要多幫助、照顧他們。
