Try and see inside your mind a wide open blue sky and a wide green sea far away. Breathe in as you circle your hands high above your head, then bend back a little. Breathe out as you circle your arms back down to your sides..."
Following the yoga teacher's gentle instructions, Bai Yunuo,15, from the High School attached to Beijing Normal University tried to get each of her poses correct.
Bai's school offered 24 elective courses (選修課) for Senor 1 students this term and she chose two. It was her first yoga class.
"I'm happy that I can learn yoga at school. I love dancing but I had some injuries on my knees when I was a kid. So I decide to try something soft. Simply stretching into different poses makes me feel free and quiet. And the music is quite comforting. The class is relaxing after a whole day's work," Bai said.
Liu Zehao,15, found his interest was Junior Achievement (企業(yè)經營模擬). The course brought students into the real world of business. In their first class, Liu and his group members named their company "Vision". Liu was elected as CEO of the company.
"Here we learn to think like an adult. We have to make our company get more money. It's new and different from other courses," he said.
Liu and Bai take their elective courses twice a week with students from other classes who share the same interest. The students will get two credits (學分) from each course at the end of this term. They have to achieve eight credit points from electives to graduate from high school.

Some of the planet’s most precious animals and plants are disappearing, according to the World Conservation Union (IUCN). The group, based in Switzerland, works with governments and experts to protect threatened species. On September 12, the IUCN released its Red List, a list of species at greatest risk of extinction.
The list includes 41,415 animals and plants. The IUCN says that habitat destruction, hunting and other causes threaten one in four mammals, one in eight birds and one in three amphibians(兩棲動物).
Who is to blame?
Scientists believe that 99 percent of threatened species are at risk because of human activity. “We are losing animals and plants at a high rate,” says Julia Marton-LefEevre, director general of the IUCN. “We need to change our behavior.” Warmer oceans and over-fishing are changing sea life. This year for the first time corals(珊瑚) made their appearance on the list. The gharial, a crocodile living in India and Nepal, has lost almost 60 percent of its population in the last 10 years. It is a victim(受害者)of habitat destruction.
Still, the news is not all bad. Thanks to efforts made to protect it, the Mauritius echo parakeet, a bird once endangered, has seen an increase in its population. “This shows that protection methods can work,” says Marton-LefEevre. “That’s the message we want to send to young people.”
In China the new reserve(保護區(qū))itself is part of green efforts that have seen more than 2,400 nature reserves of various kinds being set up, covering more than 15 percent of the nation's land area, official figures showed.
"The country's natural resources(資源) have benefited from conservation," said Lei Guangchun, director of the nature reserve department of Beijing Forestry University. "It is a big increase nowadays compared with other countries." Lei said.
The total areas of China’s natural reserves have covered 1.38 million km2, which accounts for 15.4% of China’s area, higher than both the world average(平均水平) of 11% and the rate in most developed countries.
Li Zhong, an official in charge of the nature reserves office with the State Forestry Administration, thought it was important to increase investment(投資) in such reserves at all levels.
59. What do we know about the IUCN?
A. A union for listing animals and plants on the earth
B. A group of volunteers who are interested in wildlife
C. An organization concerning the protection of rare species' survival
D. A government made up officials, scientists and experts
60. What can be concluded from the passage?
A. All the protection methods can’t work.
B. The IUCN does most of the protection.
C. The efforts China makes has paid off.
D. Enough is done in wildlife protection.
61. Which of the following is not the cause of the disappearance of the animals?
A. Bad weather B. Over-hunting C. Warmer oceans D. Habitat destruction
62.Which of the sentence is NOT true?
A. China has been paying great attention to protecting the natural resources.
B. China has set up a lot of natural reserves.
C. The natural reserves in China cover more than 15 percent of the nation's land area.

The park was named as a World Heritage Site in 1983. Here, visitors can find some of the best examples of karst topography in North America, unique Salt Plains.
Banff National Park of Canada
Banff's rich history dates back to 1885, when three railway workers came across hot mineral springs surfacing from deep within the mountains. This discovery led to the establishment of Banff National Park, and marked the beginning of Canada's national parks system. Covering 6,641 square kilometers of valleys, mountains, glaciers, forests, meadows and rivers, Banff National Park is one of the world's premier destination spots. Banff is home to a number of outstanding geological and ecological features, including the hot springs and the Castleguard Caves, Canada's longest cave system.

The nuclear leak (核泄漏) at the Fukushima power plant in Japan, which followed the deadly earthquake two weeks ago, has caused an unexpected reaction in China.
A sudden panic buying of salt occurred in many areas of our
country about a week after the disaster. Salt in these districts was almost bought up overnight. Some sellers wanted to make a fortune by raising the price. The panic buying was caused by two major rumors on the Internet: First, iodized (含碘的) salt can protect against radiation. Second, there might be a fall in sea-salt production following the nuclear pollution of the ocean. Such fears are not new. The same kind of panic happened with vinegar during the SARS outbreak and garlic in the time of the influenza period.
How can rumors like this spread in such a large country as China? Chen Fang, a reporter with the China Youth Daily said that many Internet users say there is a “crisis of trust” in today’s China. “Experts don’t have enough credibility and people don’t trust all government announcements, either.” Chen said.
However, Chen added that the rumors should not be exaggerated (夸大). Many salt-buyers didn’t care; others simply failed to understand what experts and governments were talking about. They just did as their neighbors and friends did. It was a case of the blind following the blind ? that was the real reason behind the big increase in the demand for salt.
On March 20, the Ministry of Commerce said: “The panic buying of salt has stopped and the market is back to normal.” He also said China has enough salt to satisfy demand.
Now everything is back to normal, many want to return the salt they bought. But in the view of the Xinhua Daily Telegraph, “It is true that these people paid extra money to buy the salt, but they created the crisis in the first place and caused the price to rise.” The newspaper continued: “So there is no reason why they should get the money back.”
Perhaps consumers should keep the salt to remind themselves that often rumors are without foundation.
67. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Crisis of trustB. Leak causes panic
C. A funny rumorD. The blind following the blind
68. Which is NOT the reason for which many people buy up iodized salt?
A. People are too ready to believe rumors.
B. People are afraid of a sea-salt shortage.
C. People find it a chance to make a fortune.
D. People think it protective to fight against radiation.
69. What is the Xinhua Daily Telegraph’s attitude towards the salt-buyers?
A. They should have only themselves to blame.
B. They should be punished for their activity.
C. They should trust experts and governments.
D. They should return the salt and get the money back.
70. What is the tone of the writing?
A. Considerate. B. Persuasive. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.

七.作文
One possible version:
Dear editor:
A smoking ban in all indoor public places in China, such as hotels and restaurants, has taken effect since May 1, 2014, but the survey we have recently conducted shows that the phenomenon of smoking still exists in about 40% of the indoor public places in our city.
As we know, smoking is harmful to health. It contributes a lot to lung cancer, of which many people have died in the past years. What’s worse, it can also cause many other diseases. Not only smokers themselves suffer from these smoking-related diseases, but also non-smokers around them have to breathe tobacco-polluted air.
For the sake of our health, “no smoking” signs must be put up in indoor public places so that smokers can be kindly reminded not to smoke there. In addition, those who break this rule should be strictly punished by law. However, the most important is that every one of us should improve the awareness and take the responsibility to carry out the smoking ban.
Best wishes!
Yours Sincerely
Li Hua
