When you first meet a disabled person, what is your first reaction? Curiosity? Sympathy? If you experience any of these emotions, you are not alone.Chances are that you don’t regularly associate with someone who is disabled. Here are four points to keep in mind if you should happen to meet a disabled person.
Disabled people can lead active lives
With few exceptions, a disability does not prevent someone from working, raising a family, or taking part in social activities. Many sports and recreation programs have been adapted to a person with a disability.Instead of concentrating on the disability, look at the person the same way you would look at any normal person.
It’s all right to ask questions
Many people are afraid of offending someone by asking about their disability. When meeting them for the first time, it’s natural to be curious about who he or she is, and where they’re from.Asking questions is usually acceptable, as long as you use common sense.Don’t, for example, ask a blind person how he feeds and bathes himself.
Offer help when necessary
You see a woman in a wheelchair having trouble entering a building. It’s usually appropriate to lend a hand if someone is having obvious difficulty, but keep in mind that not everyone will be willing to accept your help.Unless the woman in the wheelchair is in danger, you do your part.
Remember that we all have obstacles to overcome
No matter who we are, each of us has a weakness or challenge to face.Like you, a disabled person would much rather be accepted for who they are, rather than be pitied. Many friends have said to me, “I often forget that you are blind.” To me, that is the top compliment (贊揚).
61.Why are you curious when you first see disabled people?
A.They can’t live normally.B. You seldom deal with them.
C.You look down upon them. D.They look quite different.
62.What should you do if you find a disabled person can manage it?
A.You had better lend him or her a hand.
B.You pretend that you haven’t seen him or her.
C.You should encourage him or her to try.
D.You had better leave him or her alone.
63.From this passage we learn that _______.
A. the author is blind himself
B. a disabled person needs pitying
C. not everyone has a weakness
D. some people have no difficulty

She had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful brown haired, freckle-faced image of innocence. Outside, it was pouring so heavily.
We all stood there just inside the door of the Wal-Mart. We waited, some patiently, others annoyed because nature messed up their hurried day. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world.
Her voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance (昏昏欲睡) we were all caught in. “Mom, let’s run through the rain,” she said.
“ No, honey. We’ll wait until it slows down a bit.” Mom replied.
This young child waited about another minute and repeated, “Mom, let’s run through the rain. ”
“We’ll get soaked if we do,” Mom said.
“ No, we won’t, Mom. That’s not what you said this morning, ” the young girl said as she tore at her Mom’s arm.
“This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?”
“Don’t you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, If God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!”
The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I dare say you couldn’t hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes. Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.
Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child’s lifetime when innocent trust can be developed so that it will bloom into faith. “Honey, you are absolutely right. Let’s run through the rain. If get wet, well maybe we just need washing. ” Mom said. Then off they ran.
We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they rushed past the cars and they held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, l did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing.
You may lose your material possessions, your money and even your health, but no one can ever take away your precious memories. So don’t forget to make time and take the opportunities to make memories.

The interview has been going on for about 20 minutes and everything seems to be going well. Then, suddenly, the interviewer asks an unexpected question, “Which is more important, law or love?”
Job applicants in the West increasingly find themselves asked strange questions like this. And the signs are that this is beginning to happen in China.
Employers want people who are skilled, enthusiastic and devoted. So these are the qualities that any reasonably intelligent job applicant will try to show no matter what his or her actual feelings are.In response, employers are increasingly using the questions which try and show the applicant’s true personality.
The question in the first paragraph comes from a test called the Kiersey Temperament Sorter. It is an attempt to discover how people solve problems, rather than what they know. This is often called aptitude (天資) test.
According to Mark Baldwin of Alliance, many job applicants in China are finding this type of questions difficult.“When a Chinese fills out an aptitude test, he or she will think there is a right answer but they may fail because they try to guess what the examiner wants to see.”
This is sometimes called the prisoner’s dilemma.Applicants are trying to act cleverly in their own interest, but they fail because they don’t understand what the interviewer is looking for.Remember that in an aptitude test, the correct answer is the honest answer.
68. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To give a piece of advice to job interviewees.
B. To tell you how to deal with job interviews.
C. To advise you how to find a good job.

WASHINGTON --- It’s a great achievement that inspires concepts of robots with consciousness and independent minds.
When people or animals get hurt, they can usually compensate for minor injuries and keep limping along, but for robots, even slight damage can make them stumble and fall. However, a recently made robot has demonstrated a new ability: it can heal its own damage.
The new robot, which looks like a splay ? legged (弓形腿的), four ? footed starfish can sense injury to itself and adapt. That ability sets the new robot apart from earlier machines. Because the robot can recover from unfamiliar places.
“There is a need for planetary robotic rovers (行星機器探測車) to be able to fix things on their own,” says Josh Bongard, a professor in the University of Vermont, who is one of the device’s creator. “Robots on other planets must be able to continue their mission without human help if they are damaged and cannot communicate their problem back to Earth.”
A typical robot functions according to a computer program, but the new robot works differently. First, sensors in its four legs observe the robot’s movements and signals to its built ? in computer. From the information it collects, the robot creates its own programs that allow it to adapt to different situations. For example, when the researchers shortened one of the robot’s legs, the smart machine simply adjusted its way of walking ? it used three legs instead of four.
The researchers are looking for other places to put the resilient robot to work. One spot is the ocean floor. That dark and dangerous undersea area might be a good choice for a robot that the scientists call the Starfish. “We never officially named the robot, but we usually refer to it as the Starfish, even though a real starfish has five rather than four legs,” says Bongard. “Also, a real starfish is much better than our robot at recovering from injury, because it can actually grow its legs again.” Scientists have created robots that help humans in many ways: by exploring space, fighting fires, and even performing surgery.
72. The newly designed robot distinguishes itself from the former ones because it________.
A. can communicate with people on the earth about their problems
B. works according to a certain computer program
C. can find its problems and solve them automatically
D. can explore unfamiliar places
73.An example is given in the fourth paragraph in order to explain that the robot ________.
A. is used to create new programs
B. has typical robot functions
C. has sensors to observe its movements
D. can gather information and adapt to new conditions
74.Which of the following is TRUE about the robot “Starfish”?
A. It was spoken highly of by people for its special ability.
B. It will stumble and fall if damaged.
C. It can grow its legs again once they are broken.
D. It has started to work on the ocean floor.
75.What might be the best title of the passage?
A. How the Starfish Robot Works
B. Do ? It ? Yourself Robot Repair
C. Robots Designed to Work on Other Planets
D. New Robot Helping Us in Many Ways

Almost everyone accepts the fact that crime can never be wiped out entirely. Thus, control of crime becomes the focus of the police and governments around the world. The question lawmakers must answer is, “Which system of criminal punishment works best for society?” Each country has developed its own ideas for solutions to this question, and these solutions then determine how criminals are punished under different systems. However, none of the current systems in use has proven 100 percent effective.
There are many ideas regarding punishment of criminals. Some systems look only to get retribution (報應(yīng),懲罰) against criminals. These systems work to frighten criminals away from repeating a crime in the future. These systems also try to deter (使…打消念頭) others in society by using the criminal as an example of what can happen to a person if he or she is caught committing crimes. Rehabilitation (悔過,改造) is another philosophy by which many systems of punishment operate. The goal of these systems is to return a former criminal to society after a required period of treatment and training, usually in prison. The idea is to try to help change the person’s behavior and approach so that he or she becomes a law-abiding citizen.
Capital punishment is another form of punishment which systems use in extreme criminal cases, sometimes involving such crimes as murder, rape, and violent theft. In these cases, the person is put to death. Today, capital punishment is used in relatively few countries. Many countries have done away with it. In others, capital punishment remains only officially in law books but is rarely used. However, capital punishment remains in use in some countries, including the United States.
When looking at the number of crimes committed, the effectiveness of any of these forms of punishment comes into question. In the United States, for example, 80 percent of the people arrested each year are male, and the majority of these are young men or boys. One-third of all auto thefts, robberies, and burglaries are committed by young men under the age of 18. Generally, young people have less responsibility in society, so they risk losing little if they are caught in a criminal activity. However, it can also be argued that today’s youthful criminals do not fear the punishment they will receive if caught by the police. Current methods of criminal punishment do not serve the purpose of deterring young criminals in the United States.
A major problem with the current system of rehabilitation in the United States is that most criminals return to crime after they have supposedly been rehabilitated. Two-thirds of those caught by the police each year are repeat criminals. As a result of this fact, many people feel that rehabilitation of criminals is a lost cause. Since the late 1970s, many see retribution as a preferred (首選的) punishment in criminal cases in the United States.
76. What is the main purpose behind retribution?
A. To frighten future criminals.
B. To satisfy the victim.
C. To take criminals out of society.
D. To create repeat offenders.
77. Many crimes in the United States are committed by ________.
A. law-abiding citizensB. leaders
C. teenagersD. factory workers
78. What percent of the people arrested in the United States are female?
A. 10 percent.B. 20 percent.C. 50 percent.D. 80 percent.
79. According to the passage, which is true of the legal system in the US?
A. Capital punishment is not allowed.
B. The majority of criminals will not repeat crimes.
C. Many people see retribution as the preferred punishment.
D. Few young people commit crimes.
80. What is a big problem with the system of rehabilitation?
A. Criminals repeat crimes.
B. Prisons are too full.
C. The crime rate is going up.
D. Young men are going to prison.

A pretty, well-dress young lady stopped a taxi in a big square, and said to a driver, “Do you see that young man at the another side of the square?” “Yes,” said the taxi driver. W: Dad. It’s weekend again. Do you have any plan?
M: No. Let me look at the newspaper. Ah, here is a good action movie that starts at 2:45 pm.
W: Great. That’s our favorite, and we can take Mom with us.
M: Sounds nice. But we have to wait for her because she is at a meeting right now.
W: OK.
M: What should we do after we see the movie?
W: Go for a walk. It has been several days since we last took a walk.
M: Sweetie, it’s only been two or three days. Well, where would you like to go for a walk? Go down to the beach or through the park?
W: To the beach.
M: Well, that sounds great. Now it is 1:00 pm. Let’s get dressed and then I need some time to find the key to my car.
W: Ok. I think I should send a message to Mom first.
Text 10
I come from England and I’ve been here in America for ten days. I miss my friends a lot. I miss my family too, but somehow I feel like I miss my friends even more, maybe because I spent more time with my friends than with my family when I was at home.
I have a lot of friends in England, and they live all over the country. Some of them live very close to me while some of them live about a thousand miles away. But still we can be friends in spite of the distances. There are some friends who grew up with me. We learnt how to ride bicycles together. And there are a few other friends who went to school with me. But the friends that I feel closest to are those who went to college with me because when I started going to college, I was already 16. And at 16, you know a lot more than when you were 6 years old.
The only way that I can communicate with my friends back in England is by e-mail. I send my friends e-mails every day and they send me a lot of messages every day too. Usually they’d tell me about how life is, especially about the results of the soccer games. I’m a soccer fan. And I feel like I’m so close to them when reading those e-mail messages.
