“I Went Skydiving at 84!”
As a young girl growing up in the 1930s, I always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was alost unheard of for a woan to do that. I got a taste of that drea in 2011,when y husband arranged for e to ride in a hot air balloon for y birthday. But the experience turned out to be very dull. Around that tie, I told y husband that I wanted to skydive. So when our retireent counity(社區(qū))announced that they were having an essay copetition and the topic was an experience of a lifetie that you wanted to have, I decided to write about y drea.
In the essay, I wrote about y desire to skydive, stating George Brush Sr. did it at age 80. Why not e? I was just 84 and in pretty good health. A year went by and I heard nothing. But then at a counity party in late April 2009, they announced that I was one of the winners. I just couldn’t believe it. Inspired by this, I decided to realize y drea, even though soe of y faily ebers and y doctor were against it.
On June 11, 2009, nearly 40 of y faily and friends gathered in the area close to where I would land while I headed up in the airplane. y instructor, Jay, guided e through the experience. The plane was the noisiest one I had ever been in, but I wasn’t frightened—I was really just looking forward to the experience. When we reached 13,000 feet, Jay instructed e to throw yself out of the plane. When we first hit the air, the wind was so strong that I could hardly breathe. For a second I thought, “What have I gotten yself into?” But then everything got caler. We were in a free fall for about a inute before Jay opened the parachute(降落傘), then we just floated downward for about five inutes. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view beloas unlike anything I have ever felt—uch better than the hot air balloon. I was just enjoying it.
Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of y life. I hope other people will look at e and realize that you don’t stop living just because you are 84 years old. If there’s soething you want to experience, look into it. If it’s soething that is possible, ake it happen.

When ilk arrived on the doorstep
When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a ilkan delivering ilk to our doorstep. His nae was r. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take y eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave e a quarter out of his coin changer.
Of course, he delivered ore than ilk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, y other would pen a note-“Please add a bottle of butterilk next delivery”-and place it in the box along with the epty bottles. And then, the butterilk would agically appear.
All of this was about ore than convenience. There existed a close relationship between failies and their ilken. r. Basille even had a key to out house, for those ties when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the ilk wouldn’t freeze. And I reeber r. Basille fro tie to tie taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.
There is sadly no hoe ilk delivery today. Big copanies allowed the production of cheaper ilk, thus aking it difficult for ilken to copete. Besides, ilk is for sale everywhere, and it ay just not have been practical to have a delivery service.
Recently, an old ilk box in the countryside I saw brought back y childhood eories. I took it hoe and planted it on the back porch (門廊). Every so often y son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of y boyhood, and of the ilkan who brought us friendship along with his ilk.

I also love y laptop coputer ,as it holds all of y writing and thoughts .Despite this love of technology ,I know that there are ties when I need to ove away fro these devices(設備) and truly counicate with others.
On occasion, I teach a course called History atters for a group of higher education anagers. y goals for the class include a full discussion of historical thees and ideas .Because I want students to thoroughly study the aterial and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroo ,I have a rule —no laptop ,iPads ,phones ,etc .When students were told y rule in advance of the class, soe of the were not happy .
ost students assue that y reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students isusing technology . There’s a bit of truth to that. Soe students assue that I a anti-technology . There’s no truth in that at all . I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to y students.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage coplex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too uch dependence on outside inforation for ideas . I want students to dig deep within theselves for inspiration and ideas. I want the to push each other to think differently and ake connections between the course the aterial and the class discussion .
I’ve been teaching y history class in this way for any years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environent that I create .Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge , they learn at a level that helps the keep the course aterial beyond the classroo .
I’ not saying that I won’t ever change y ind about technology use in y history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change ,I’ sticking to y plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.

As the railroads and the highways shaped the Aerican West in the past centuries, a new electrical generating(發(fā)電)and transission(輸送)syste for the 21th century will leave a lasting ark on the West, for better or worse. uch of the real significance of railroads and highways is not in their direct physical effect on the scenery, but in the ways that they affect the surrounding counity. The sae is true of big solar pants and the power lines that will be laid down to ove electricity around.
The 19th century saw land grants(政府撥地)offered to railroad copanies to build the transcontinental railroads ,leaving public land in between privately owned land . In uch of the west ,soe of the railroad sections were developed while others reained undeveloped ,and in both cases the landownership has presented unique challenges to land anageent ,with the copletion or the interstate highway syste ,any of the sall towns which sprang up as railway stops and developed well ,have lost their lifeblood and died .
Big solar plants and their power lines will also have effects far beyond their direct footprint in the west .this is not an arguent against building then ,we need alternative energy badly .a(chǎn)nd to really take advantage of it we need to be able to ove electricity around far ore readily than we can now .
So trade-offs will have to be ade .soe scenic sport will be sacrificed .soe species (物種)will be forced to ove ,or will be carefully oved to special accoodations ,deals will be struck to reduce the iediate effects .
The lasting effects of these trade-offs are another atter .the 21st century developent of the Aerican west as an ideal place for alternative energy is going to throw off a lot of power and oney to do a lot of good .but it is just as likely that they will be spent wastefully and will leave new probles behind , just like the railroad and the highway .
The oney set aside in negotiated trade ?offs and the institution that control will shape the west far beyond the iediate footprint of power plants and transission lines .so let’s reeber the effects of the railroad and the highways as we construct these new power plants in the west .
