三、理解(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)
A
He was no scholar, and his classmates made fun of him. Rather than read, the kid really preferred running around with an 8-mm camera, shooting homemade movies of wrecks (殘骸) of his Lionel train set, which he showed to friends for a small fee.
In his second year of high school, he dropped out. But when his parents persuaded him to return, he was placed in a learning-disabled class. He lasted one month. Only when the family moved to another town did he land in a more suitable high school, where he eventually graduated.
After being denied entrance into a traditional filmmaking school, Steven Spielberg enrolled in English at California State College at Long Beach. Then in 1965, one of those important moments, his life took a complete turn. Visiting Universal Studios, he met Chuck Silvers, an executive in the editorial department. Silvers liked the kid who made 8-mm films and invited him back sometime to visit.
He appeared the next day. Dressed in a dark suit and tie, carrying his father’s briefcase with nothing inside but a sandwich and candy bars Spielberg strode (跨步) confidently up to the guard at the gate of Universal and gave him a casual wave. The guard waved back. He was in.
“For the entire summer,” Spielberg remembers, “I dressed in my suit and hung out with the directors and writers including Silvers, who knew the kid wasn’t a studio employee, but pretended he didn’t notice that. I even found an office that wasn’t being used, and became a host without permission. I bought some plastic tiles and put my name in the building directory: Steven Spielberg, Room 23C.
It paid off for everyone. Ten years later, the 28-year-old Spielberg directed Jaws, which took in $470 million, then the highest-grossing movie of all time. Dozens of films and awards have followed because Steven Spielberg knew what his teachers didn’t — talent is in the eyes of the filmmaker.

The world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, was opened with a grand fireworks ceremony, which was attended by some 6,000 guests.
During the ceremony, a screen displayed its exact height, which had previously been kept secret — 828m, far taller than the previous record holder, Taipei 101.
“We weren’t sure how high we could go,” said Bill Baker, the building’s structural engineer. He also said that the building’s design had unbelievable technical challenges because Dubai has high winds and is close to an area where earthquakes frequently happen. “It was kind of an exploration, a learning experience.”
“We have been hit by lightning twice, there was a big earthquake last year that came across from Iran, and we have had all types of wind which has hit us since we began the construction. The results have been good and I salute (向……致敬) the designers and professionals who helped build it,” he said.
Construction of the building began in 2004. The tower has the world’s tallest service lift, the world’s highest swimming pool on the 76th floor and the world's highest observation deck (觀景臺) — on the 124th floor.
Covered in 28,000 glass panels (面板), the tower has 160 floors and more than 500,000 square metres of space for offices and flats. It will be home to 1,044 luxury apartments, 49 floors of offices and a 160-room hotel. Around 12,000 people are expected to live and work in the tower.
However, investors are facing losses even before the tower is completed because the global economic crisis makes property prices (房產價格) go down in Dubai.
Some apartments sold for $2,700 per square feet, but are now going for less than half of that. Experts say it will be particularly hard to lease (出租) office space because few companies can pay the high prices during the economic crisis.

Genetically modified (GM) (轉基因的) crops have made an enormous positive influence on the world. In recent years, GM technology has brought much benefit directly to farms, reducing the use of poisonous chemicals that kill pests of plants, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions (排放).
A particular concern among farmers in developing countries is the loss of crops to insect pests. One way to fight this problem is to use chemicals, but this behavior will do harm to the health of farmers, the environment, and the people who eat the food. Instead, biotechnology can be used to increase production of pest-resistant crops. For example, in Africa, the sweet potato serves as an important crop, but viruses (病毒) can dramatically destroy its output by up to 80%. The Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, however, has developed a genetically modified sweet potato that can increase crop production by 18-25%. What’s more, this new kind of potato has genes that resist damage due to bad climate or unexpected natural disasters.
The use of genetically modified foods can have a positive effect on the economy, especially in less developed countries. GM crops have already led to economic growth in South Africa, according to some studies. Because GM crops require fewer chemicals, farmers can save money on both the costs of pesticides and labor necessary to manage the treatments. This, combined with higher output, allow the farmer to gain more from the product.
With an increasing adoption of GM crops, the use of pest-control chemicals has been greatly reduced. In fact, while not necessarily related to food-related biotechnology, some GM plants have been developed to take care of heavy metal pollution in some polluted soil. Finally, biotechnology can allow people to receive vaccines (疫苗) that are difficult to distribute. By putting vaccines into food products, organizations can more easily transport them to people in need.
46. We can learn from the text that _______.
A. GM crops benefit the environment
B. farmers fail to grow a lot of plants
C. insect pests do less harm to the soil
D. more greenhouse gas is sent into the air
47. What can we infer from the example of the sweet potato?
A. Kenya will have the most advanced technology in the future.
B. Crops can be modified to grow in worse natural environment.
C. Potatoes grown in wet areas can resist different kinds of insects.
D. The adoption of GM potatoes may do harm to the farmers’ health.
48. According to the text, GM crops in poor countries _______.
A. need further research on chemical resistance
B. cost more time and money on farm management
C. suffer fewer natural disasters during the growth
D. offer good economic benefits to the farmers

Do you have current facts and figures about how much rainforest is being destroyed each day around the world, and for what purpose(s)? Exact numbers are nearly impossible, but most experts agree that we are losing upwards of 80,000 acres of tropical rainforest daily. Along with this loss and degradation (退化), we are losing some 135 plant, animal and insect species every day — or some 50,000 species a year — as the forests fall.
According to researcher and writer Rhett Butler, who runs the critically praised website, Mongabay.com, tropical rainforests are playing a key role in the basic functioning of the planet. They help maintain the climate by regulating atmospheric gases and stabilizing (使穩(wěn)定) rainfall, and provide many other important ecological functions.
Rainforests are also home to some 50 percent of the world’s species, Butler reports, “making them an extensive library of biological and genetic resources.” Environmentalists also point out that a quarter of our modern pharmaceuticals are obtained from rainforest, but less than one percent of the trees and plants in the tropics have been tested for effective treatments. Sadly, then, we don’t really know the true value of what we’re losing as we cut down, burn, and plant over what was once a treasure of biodiversity.
According to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), overall tropical deforestation rates this decade are 8.5 percent higher than during the 1990s. While this figure suits all forests in the world’s tropics, researchers believe the loss of primary tropical rainforest has increased by as much as 25 percent since the 1990s.
Despite increased public awareness of the importance of tropical rainforests, deforestation rates are actually on the rise, mostly due to activities such as commercial logging, agriculture, cattle ranching, dam-building and mining, but also due to the collection of fuel wood. Indeed, as long as commercial interests are allowed access to these economically depressed areas of the world, and as long as populations of poor rural people continue to expand, tropical rainforests will continue to fall.
51. Tropical rainforests can help to adjust the climate because they .
A. reflect more heat from the earth
B. produce rich soil and prevent soil loss
C. bring about heavy rainfalls through the world
D. regulate atmospheric gases and stabilize rainfall
52. What does the underlined word “pharmaceuticals” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

B. Rainforests are home to many species worldwide.
C. About 50,000 species die out yearly with rainforests falling.
D. Nearly 80,000 acres of tropical rainforest are lost every year.
54. According to the text, deforestation is mostly caused by activities EXCEPT .
A. commercial logging and miningB. dam-building and agriculture
C. collection of fuel wood for livingD. expanding of urban people
55. The text mainly tells readers about .
A. the causes of deforestation
B. the importance of tropical rainforests

四、書面表達(共兩節(jié),滿分45分)
第一節(jié) 表達(共5小題;每小題3分,滿分15分)
閱讀下面的短文,并根據(jù)短文后的要求答題(請注意問題后的詞數(shù)要求)。
Carlos and Cecilia were both straight-A students in middle school. But now that they’re in high school, Carlos finds himself relying on Cecilia’s notes to do well on tests. He also finds himself wondering how Cecilia manages to take such good notes. Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well on all your schoolwork— everything from taking tests to researching a paper. But unfortunately, most schools don’t have classes that teach you how to take notes. So here are some tips:
Write down key facts.
If you have a teacher who writes notes on the board, that’s wonderful. You can copy them down. If not, write down the most important points from class.
Different teachers do things differently. For example, some may mention lots of dates and facts in class but only write the key ones on the board. Others ______________, but they may repeat a certain date or piece of information. That’s a sign that it’s probably important. After a while, you’ll get to know a teacher’s style.
Don’t overdo it.
Don’t go crazy taking notes, though. You’ll be working away like mad if you try to write down every word said in class. And if you focus too much on getting your notes right, you might miss important points. Some people actually learn better by listening, writing down a few key points, and then going over the material after class when they have more time.
Copy.
Depending on how neat your handwriting is, you may want to copy your notes when you get home. You’re more likely to figure out an unreadable word or sentence on the day of the lesson than you are weeks later when you look back over your notes in preparation for a test.
Organize.
Keep notes for the same subject in one place so you can find everything easily when it comes time for a test. Some people combine the copying technique with organization by using one notebook for class notes and then copying these notes into a notebook for each subject when they get back home.
