第三部分:閱讀理解(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)
閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C、D)中選出最佳選項。
A
Almost all aspects of American pop culture such as McDonald’s, American films, and blue jeans can be seen in Brazil. My father used to say that all kinds of American cultural icons(偶像)were distasteful. When I was a child, it was forbidden to drink coke and to chew chewing gum in my house. Both actions were representative of the American dominance(主導(dǎo))to my father while he had an American Ford car.
I think it is difficult to prevent American cultural hegemony(霸權(quán)).Many years ago, there was an attempt to reduce the number of American films in Brazil. The government passed a law that all cinemas should show a higher percentage of Brazilian movies. However, we didn’t have enough good films, or even enough films, to show. so this measure fell soon after. American music is, of course, present in Brazil. Everybody knows about Madonna, Michael Jackson, and other icons of American music; but Brazilian music has never lost its first place in the Brazilians’ preferences.
I think we don’t need to be afraid of cultural free trade. People tend to be selective, and not everything that is imported is necessarily bad. Our native Brazilians also stand up against the dominance of imported culture in their lives while they wear watches and shorts and use tape recorders. We can’t avoid the process, but we could learn to be more critical and as selective as possible.
56. According to the passage, the author’s father _______ .
A. was greatly influenced by American pop culture
B. forbade his children to watch American films

D. She herself was greatly influenced by American pop culture
58. The Brazilian government made an attempt to _______.
A. control the influence of American pop culture.
B. prohibit American pop music from being played.
C. forbid Brazilians to watch American films.
D. produce enough Brazilian films and music
59. From the whole passage we can learn that _______.
A. at first the author was very concerned about the American dominance
B. American pop culture consists mainly of American films, music ,blue jeans, etc
C. the author’s father was afraid of their children getting into bad habits
D. cultural free trade should be encouraged and promoted anyway
60. The author probably thinks that American cultural dominance _______.
A. is of benefit to Brazilians B. shouldn’t be left as it is
C. can be avoided with efforts D. should be wiped out

Heading off to college this year? Here are some fashion tips from our experts you should keep in mind:
Logo mania (品牌狂熱癥): Wearing the logos of brands aimed at younger customers physically identifies you as part of that age group, so consider the targeted age group of the stores you shop at. It’s tempting to load up on logos, especially well-known logos that signify high-end brands. But consider this: college is a time of self-discovery, a chance to develop your own personal style. Instead of wearing logos head to toe, “walking advertisement”-style, why not express who you really are?
Wear real pants! The combination of leggings and baggy shirts is all too common on college campuses. Smith points out that leggings, yoga pants, and sweatpants are entirely unacceptable in public unless you’re exercising. Although leggings worn as pants are a common trend among high school and college girls, they are not an appropriate choice for daywear. As a young woman, your style choice should begin to reflect your maturity level. So, get rid of leggings and wear real pants!
Keep the cute factor to a minimum: Stay away from sweaters and T-shirts with smiling animals, cartoon characters, or Hello Kitty on them. Sure, kittens might be cute, but they’re not doing you any favors in the style department. Dressing too cutesy can take years off your look, and not necessarily in a good way!
61. The second paragraph indicates the importance of ________.
A. impressing professors B. getting on well with classmates
C. creating a professional image D. dressing appropriately
62. The author believes that college girls should ________.
A. choose a logo that suits their age B. try to load up on well-known logos
C. use logos to show who they are D. find their identity by trying different logos
63. The author recommends wearing real pants because ________.
A. leggings and baggy shirts are too common
B. yoga pants and sweatpants are not as comfortable
C. real pants can present you with appropriate maturity
D. people like real pants better than the other pants
64. What’s the writer’s attitude towards sweaters with animals on them?
A. They make people look lovely. B. They are very fashionable these days.
C. They will show you’re an animal lover.
D. They are not suitable for college-aged students.
65. In which magazine would you most likely find this passage?
A. Business Week. B. Parents. C. In style. D. Travel & Leisure.

It is obvious that doctors recognize obesity as a health problem. So why is it so hard for them to talk to their patients about it?
The results of two surveys, one of primary care physicians and the other of patients, found that while most doctors want to help patients lose weight and think it is their responsibility to do so, they often don’t know what to say.
“So while doctors may tell patients they are overweight, the conversation often ends there,” said Christine C. Ferguson, director of the Stop Obesity Alliance. “Patients are not told about the possibility of diabetes (糖尿病),” she said. “And doctors don’t feel they have good information to give. They felt that they didn’t have adequate tools to address this problem.
The lack of dialogue hurts patients, too. The patient survey, of over 1,000 adults, found that most overweight patients don’t even know that they’re too heavy. Only 39 percent of overweight people surveyed had ever been told by a health care provider that they were overweight.
Of those who were told they were obese, 90 percent were also told by their doctors to lose weight, the survey found. In fact most have tried to lose weight and may have been successful in the past—and many are still trying, the survey found. And many understand that losing even a small amount of weight can have a positive impact on their health and reduce their risk of obesityrelated diseases like hypertension and diabetes.
Dr. William Bestermann Jr., medical director of Holston Medical Group, in Kingsport, Tenn., which ranks the 10th in obesity among metropolitan areas in the United States, said the dialogue had to be an ongoing one and could not be dropped after just one mention of the problem. “If you’re to be successful with helping your patients lose weight, you have to talk to them at actually every visit about their progress, and find something to encourage them and coach them,” he said.
He acknowledged that many doctors tend to be not optimistic.
“Part of this is that there's this common belief, and doctors are burdened by it, too, that overweight people are weak-willed and just don’t have any willpower and are selfindulgent and all that business,” he said. “If you think that way, you’re not going to spend time having a productive conversation.”
66.What is the Stop Obesity Alliance most probably in Paragraph 3?
A. An organization of doctors suffering from obesity.
B. An organization of patients suffering from obesity.
C. A research group that conducts special surveys about overweight people.
D. A research group dealing with doctor-patient relationship.
67.How many of the patients surveyed have been advised by their doctors to lose weight?
A. About 350.B. About 390. C. About 900. D. About 1,000.
68.What can be inferred about obesity patients in Paragraph 5?
A. They are not as hopeless as doctors think they are.
B. Most of them have tried hard to lose weight, but in vain.
C. Without their doctors’ constant coaching, there is little chance of their succeeding in losing weight.
D. Most of them have just given up their hope of becoming less heavy.
69.According to the passage, which factor contributes to the lack of dialogue between doctors and patients?
A. Most doctors never think of warning their patients about their weight problem.
B. Many doctors find it difficult to persuade overweight people to lose weight.
C. Most patients are too weak-willed to do anything about their weight.
D. Many patients tend not to trust their doctors about their weight problem.
70.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. Obesity in the U. S.B. Trouble of overweight Americans.
C. Talk more, help better.D. Doctors or patients---who to bear more blame?

People should be warned against using mobile phones outdoors in stormy weather because they may “be struck by lightning”, according to doctors.
Three experts have described how a teenage girl was struck by lightning while using her phone in a large London park. The girl, aged 15, recovered, but a year later was still wheelchair-bound and found to be suffering complex physical and emotional problems.
The girl also had a perforate eardrum(打孔耳膜)on the side where she had been holding the mobile phone. She was having general recovery in Northwick Park Hospital, Middlesex.
Swinda Esprit, a senior house officer, said that while the brain and muscle damage was similar to that of many lightning victims—who can experience heart attacks on being struck— the ear problems were not.
She said that the damages were particularly relevant for people who might be involved in less serious lightning incidents, who might otherwise recover, but would never get their full hearing back if struck while on the phone.
“We were shocked by the damage, which is why we wanted to draw attention to it,” Dr Esprit said. “A year on and she still was suffering these difficult hearing.”
They added that three other cases had been reported in newspapers in China, South Korea, and Malaysia. In the Malaysian case, a sales executive was killed by lightning while talking on his phone during a thunderstorm near Kuala Lumpur.
“All these events resulted in death,” the doctors wrote. “This rare phenomenon is a public health issue, and education is necessary to stress the risk.”
The Australian Lightning Protection Standard recommends that metallic objects, including cordless or mobile phones, should not be carried outdoors during thunderstorms. However, “the United States National Weather Service says on its website that both are safe to use “because there is no direct path between you and the lightening”.
Paul Taylor, of “the Met Office”, said the ear injuries were a consequence of mobile phones being metal, and not related to radio waves.
Mr. Taylor said that mobile phones should be treated as another piece of metal, similar to carrying coins or wearing rings, and people need to be warned against the possible danger.
71. What do we know about the teenage girl?
A. She was struck by lightning at school.
B. She completely recovered from being struck.
C. She still suffered from mental problems. D. She had to press her ear all day.
72. It can be inferred that damage done by lightening while using mobile phones ______.
A. is more serious than that when one is not using a mobile phone
B. can be healed quickly except for heart attacks
C. is less serious because the victims can usually recover
D. is mainly in the brain and muscle of the victims
73. Why did doctors stress the risk about using phones outside in lightening?
A. Because more people are faced with it.
B. Because some deaths have been caused.
C. Because lightning is harmful for the brain.
D. Because a teenage girl got killed.
74. We can infer from the last three paragraphs that ______.
A. both cordless and mobile phones are safe to use outside in lightning
B. there is no direct connection between lightning and ear injuries at all
C. opinions differ as to whether it is safe to use mobiles phones in lightning
D. ear injuries are the result of carrying coins or wearing rings in lightning
75. The purpose in writing this passage is ______.
A. to draw attention to the risk of using mobile phones in lightening
B. to focus on various damages done to lightning victims
C. to tell us the news that a teenage girl was struck by lightning
D. to stress the danger of making phone calls in lightning

You've no doubt heard people say how much they "need"a holiday, when what they really mean is that they want one. Certainly, people working under pressure feel a very strong desire to escape from work and become less tight during their holidays, and experience a changed environment.
However, work for many people today is office work and mental, rather than physical tasks. These people may seek much more energy-taking activities while on holiday, rather than simply lying on a beach.
Once people become used to going on holiday, taking holidays becomes a habit. For many people the holiday is one of the last things to be given up, and indeed many workers have chosen to spend some of their last pay when being on holiday. It may give them a "lift” in facing some difficulties in life.
Most of us also enjoy showing off the lovely tansdark (曬黑) skins we get from a holiday. So many tourists are now able to afford holidays in the sun that tans have become quite common; although we join a tan together with health, it has been fully shown that too much sunshine will__________________, as well as drying out one's skin and leading to more lines on your face later in life.
