One evening I went out and left my 17-year-old son and his girlfriend in charge of his 8-year-old brother and 4-year-old sister. I left with complete confidence that the older children would do a wonderful job of babysitting the younger children and the younger children would do a wonder ful job of accompanying(陪伴)the older ones. Later, I discovered that I was completely wrong.
I had decided to return home earlier than planned so that my son and his girlfriend could go out. I called home with this happy news. But instead of hearing his cheerful, grateful voice on the other end of the line, all I heard was the sound of a telephone ringing.
It was, I should point out, after 10 p.m., when the two younger children should have been in bed, and when the two older children should have been answering the phone. “I’ll give him a lesson, ” I said.I decided they must be outside. Why they might be outside at 10:30 on a winter night I had no idea, but it was the only explanation I could come up with.
Finally, in desperation(絕望), I called his girlfriend’s house. His girlfriend answered. “Yes,” she said brightly, “He’s right here.”
He came on the phone.I was not my usual calm, patient. After all, one of the rules of survival for modern parents is that you can’t trust modern teenagers. “Where are the children?” I said. He said they were with him. They had done nothing wrong. My son had taken the younger children over to his girlfriend’s house just for ice cream and cake. Well, it turns out that I shouldn’t have believed it. It was only part of the truth.
The following Saturday evening we were at my parents’ home, celebrating my birthday. My oldest son gave me the children’s gifts — a series of lovely color photographs of my children, dressed in their best clothes, and wearing their most wonderful expressions. They are pictures to treasure a lifetime, all taken by the father of my son’s girlfriend.
46. The author went out and left her eldest son in charge of the younger children because________.
A. she knew that his girlfriend was a good baby-sitter
B. she believed he could tak e good care of the younger ones with the help of his girlfriend
C. the older children have always loved the younger ones
D. she could not find a baby-sitter on that winter night
47. Shortly after the author left home one evening, she discovered that _________.
A. her son had brought his girlfriend home B. her son had left home with his girlfriend
C. she shouldn’t have completely trusted her son D. she should have taken the children along with her
48. “It was only part of the truth.” implies that the children not only enjoyed ice-cream but also _________.
A. had their pictures taken B. received some gifts
C. had a birthday party D. showed off their best clothes
49. Which is the best title of this passage?
A. An Evening Out B. Modern Teenagers C. Mother and Children D. A Precious Birthday Gift

In a world with limited land, water and other natural resources, the harm from the traditional business model is on the rise. A ctually, the past decade has seen more and more forests disappearing and the globe becoming increasingly warm. People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable(可持續(xù)的)ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words, we should keep the earth healthy while using its supply of natural resources.
Today, sustainable development is a proper trend in many countries. According to a recent study, the global market for low-carbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decade. China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy revolution. It is now trying hard to make full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains. In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil, which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown by more than 50%.
Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets. First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions(排放)and targets for saving and reusing energy. Besides, stronger arrangement of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can avoid the huge expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those expenses can accelerate the cha nge from traditional model to a sustainable one.
The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of growing population within the limits of this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries.
54. The traditional business model is harmful because of all the following EXCEPT that _________.
A. it consumes natural resources B. it makes the world warmer
C. it brings severe damage to forests D. it makes growth hard to continue
55. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. China lacks wind and solar energy. B. China is the leader of the low-carbon market.
C. Palm oil is made at the cost of valuable forests. D. High-speed trains are a low-carbon development.
56. To fully develop the low-carbon markets, governments can ________.
A. cut public ex penses B. encourage energy conservation
C. develop public resources D. forbid carbon emission
57. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To advocate sustainable development. B. To compare two business models.
C. To predict a change of the global market. D. To introduce a new business model.
D
Life is difficult.
This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend (超越) it. Once we truly know that life is difficult — once we truly understand and accept it — then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.
Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.
What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness, or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of pr oblems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.
Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and wor king out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, those things that hurt, instruct. It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.
58.The writer probably used just one short sentence in the first paragraph to ________.
A. save space B. persuade readers C. make readers laugh D. get readers’ attention
59.According to the passage, we give school children difficult problems to solve in order to________.
A. encourage them to learn B. teach them to fear the pain of solving the problem
C. help them learn to deal with pain D. teach them how to respect for problems
60. From the passage, it can be inferred that _________.
A. everybody has problems B. we become stronger by meeting and solving the problems of life
C. life is difficult because our problems bring us pain D. people like to complain about their problems
A. The spreading of tea
B. The history of tea growing
C. Changes of tastes for drinks
D. Reducing cancer risks
E. The plant Camellia sinensis
F. A woman’s opinion of tea
61. ________________
Americans are far more knowledgeable about drinks than they were 20 years ago. Witness the Starbucks revolution and you’ll know where the trend goes. Now, encouraged by recent studies suggesting that it can cut the risk of cancer and heart disease and slow the aging process, tea is enjoying a similar change. Enough fashionable tea houses are springing up to make even longtime coffee drinkers consider switching drinks.
62. ________________
Tea is available in more places than ever. The Tea Association of the United States reports that from 1990 to 1999, annual sales of the drink grew to $4.6 billion from $1.8 billion. “Green tea is seen by consumers as a ‘functional food’” — delivering health benefits beyond food itself, says Vierhile.
63. ________________
Recently published studies point out that only teas that come from the leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis have been shown to contain health benefits. Other herbal teas may taste good, yet they do little more than warm up the drinker. But for Camellia sinensis, the evidence is powerful. In a 1998 study, Harvard University researchers found that drinking one cup of black tea a day lowered the risk of heart attack by as much as 44 percent compared with non-tea drinkers, and other studies have suggested that the antioxid ants (抗氧化劑) in these so-called real teas can also prevent cancer.
64. ________________
One such antioxidant in green tea is ECGC, a compound 20 times as powerful as vitamin E and 200 times as powerful as vitamin C. “When people ask me for something good and cheap they can do to reduce their cancer risk, I tell them to drink real tea,” says Mitchell Gaynor, director of medical oncology at New York City’s Strang-Cornell Cancer Prevention Center.
65. ________________
Among those inspired to become a green-tea drinker is Tess Ghilaga, a New York writer who took it up after seeking advice from a nutritionist six years ago. “I’ve never been a coffee drinker,” says Ghilaga, 33. “She told me to start drinking green tea for the antioxidant qualities.” Now Ghilaga and her husband habitually make tea — they order theirs from InPursuitofTea.com, an Internet tea company. And although tea contains about half the amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee, “you still get such a kick from it,” says Ghilaga.

A survey about the relationship between students and teachers, family members or classmates is being made by a research group of our school. Generally speaking, we are getting on well with each other. However, there exist some problems. Some students are easy to their temper because of anxiety and study burden. What’s worse, they sometimes they quarrel with others, and even turn a deaf ear to their parents and teachers, which is very disappointing.
In my opinion, we middle school students should make our efforts to improve the situation. First, we should respect our parents and teachers as well as our classmates. Second, when we are not feeling good or happy, we can chat with our friends or teachers or even parents. It is likely that they can understand us better and give us some reasonable advice.
