戶口是中國(guó)特有的東西，“戶口”一詞也是頗具特色的中國(guó)詞匯，想必大家一定不會(huì)陌生。與戶口相關(guān)的事情很多，小到辦護(hù)照，辦港澳臺(tái)通行證，大到是否能在當(dāng)?shù)貐⒓?a href="http://www.yy-art.cn/gaokao/" target="_blank">高考，以及是否能在當(dāng)?shù)刭I房買車。有人說戶口限制了人才的發(fā)展，有人說戶口規(guī)范了政府對(duì)公民的管理。不管怎樣，既然“戶口”已經(jīng)是我們生活中一個(gè)活生生存在的詞匯，就連小學(xué)生也大概知道它的意思，因此，本著“學(xué)以致用”的原則，廣大英語學(xué)習(xí)者們很有必要知曉它的英語說法�，F(xiàn)在，我們就一起來討論如何將“戶口”翻譯為英語。
為了精確翻譯“戶口”，我們先來了解它準(zhǔn)確的中文含義�！冬F(xiàn)代漢語詞典》第六版明確說明，“戶口”與“戶籍”同義，指“公安部門以戶為單位登記本地區(qū)內(nèi)居民的冊(cè)子，轉(zhuǎn)指作為本地區(qū)居民的身份”。換句話說，“戶口”可以是具體的概念，指戶口簿(也叫戶口本);也可以是抽象的概念，指某地居民的合法居住身份。剛才《現(xiàn)代漢語詞典》對(duì)“戶口”的描述有四個(gè)關(guān)鍵詞——“以戶為單位”、“登記”、“冊(cè)子”以及“身份”�！耙詰魹閱挝弧笨捎胔ousehold表示，Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English(《朗文當(dāng)代英語詞典》)對(duì)household的解釋是all the people who live together in one house，也即“同住一個(gè)屋檐下的所有人”，與“以戶為單位”對(duì)應(yīng);“登記”可作名詞譯為registration;“冊(cè)子”可譯為booklet，Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner's Dictionary 5th Edition(《柯林斯高級(jí)英語學(xué)習(xí)詞典第5版》)是這樣解釋booklet的：A booklet is a small book that has a paper cover and that gives you information about something，也即“承載某種信息的有封面的小書”，這跟戶口簿的外形與功能相符。
因此，戶口若指戶口簿，可譯為household registration booklet，有些地方也譯作household registration permit，這里的permit是“許可證”的意思，以下文字就用到了permit這一詞：One of China's oldest tools of population control, the hukou is essentially a household registration permit, akin to an internal passport【站】。我們經(jīng)常說到的“戶口簿原件/戶口簿復(fù)印件”就是the original of a household registration booklet/a copy of a household registration booklet(請(qǐng)注意冠詞the與a的使用)。
戶口指若某地居民的合法居住身份，簡(jiǎn)單說成household registration即可，“身份”沒有必要翻譯出來，以下文字可驗(yàn)證這一點(diǎn)：The problem with this is we have here a household registration system, the “hukou” system【站】。其中household registration system對(duì)應(yīng)“hukou” system，同時(shí)將system拿掉，不難看出這里的household registration就是“戶口”之意�！坝修r(nóng)村戶口/有城鎮(zhèn)戶口/有北京戶口”可譯作hold a rural household registration/hold an urban household registration/hold a Beijing household registration，這里的registration當(dāng)作可數(shù)名詞處理，如：She is the first to go to university in her family and held a rural household registration until her parents moved to a small town when migration controls began to be relaxed【)官方網(wǎng)站】。
稍作總結(jié)，“戶口”可譯為household registration booklet/permit(強(qiáng)調(diào)戶口簿)或household registration(強(qiáng)調(diào)居民的合法居住身份)。
若將“戶口”看作是一種中國(guó)特有的體制，則可將“戶口”的漢語拼音hukou加上，以此來體現(xiàn)中國(guó)特色。BBC(英國(guó)廣播公司)官方網(wǎng)站、CNN(美國(guó)有線電視新聞網(wǎng))官方網(wǎng)站，以及《華盛頓郵報(bào)》官方網(wǎng)站都曾將“戶口”的這一含義譯作the hukou system of household registration，這里的system為“體制”或“制度”之意，如：One of the greatest issues for China's 250 million migrant workers is the "hukou" system of household registration【)官方網(wǎng)站】。
順便說一下，經(jīng)常與“戶口”這一概念一起出現(xiàn)的，是“戶口所在地”，填表的時(shí)候通常會(huì)用到。其實(shí)，既然“戶口”是household registration，與其“舍近求遠(yuǎn)”，不如“簡(jiǎn)單粗暴”，將“戶口所在地”譯作place of household registration，這樣反倒言簡(jiǎn)意賅，因?yàn)槲覀冇衟lace of birth(出生地)一說。
