1. 表示人的“性格”或“品質(zhì)”，或表示事物的“特性”或“特征”等，可用作可數(shù)或不可數(shù)名詞。如：
They are twins but have quite different characters. 他們雖為雙胞胎，但性格卻相當(dāng)不同。
He has a strong character. /He is a man of strong character.

2. 表示小說或戲劇等中的“人物”或“角色”，是可數(shù)名詞。如：

◆charge n. & v.
1. 用作名詞，注意以下用法：
(1) 表示“收費”，是可數(shù)名詞，通常(但不一定)用復(fù)數(shù)形式。如：
Your charges are too high. 你收費太貴了。
What is the charge in the hotel? / What are the charges in the hotel? 這旅館收費多少?
(2) 表示“負責(zé)”、“管理”，通常為不可數(shù)名詞。如：
Doctors have charge of the sick people. 醫(yī)生負責(zé)照顧病人。
Soon he will take charge of the department. 他很快會來負責(zé)管理這個部門。
區(qū)別并比較(有 the 表被動，無 the 表主動)：
這個工廠由格林先生負責(zé)。
Mr Green is in charge of this factory.
This factory is in the charge of Mr Green.
(3) 表示“控告”，是可數(shù)名詞。如：
They made a charge against the boss. 他們控告老板。
He was arrested on a charge of murder. 他因謀殺罪被逮捕。
2. 用作動詞，無論是表示“收(費)”、“索(價)”還是“控告”等，都是及物動詞。用法上注意：表示“收(費)”，通常與介詞 for連用，并且可以帶雙賓語；而表示“指控”通常與介詞 with 連用。如：
He charged me 100 dollars for this coat. 這件外套他要我一百美元。
The driver was charged with speeding. 司機被控超速駕車。

◆cheap adj. & adv.
1. cheap 可用作形容詞，意為“便宜的”，通常只用來修飾具體的東西，一般不修飾像價格(price)、工資(salary /wages)等抽象概念。如：
I won’t buy cheap dresses. 我不買廉價的衣服。
It’s too cheap to be good. 這東西太便宜，好不了。
注：可說 at a low (high) price(以低價或高價)，而不說 at a cheap (an expensive) price。
2. cheap 用作副詞時，與其相應(yīng)的副詞形式 cheaply 同義，意為“便宜地”、“價廉地”。在口語或非正式文體中，通常用 cheap而很少用 cheaply, 與動詞 buy, sell, get 等動詞連用更是如此。
如：
I bought the shirt cheap. 這襯衫我買得很便宜。
He sold (bought) it cheap(ly). 他把它廉價地賣掉(買下)了。
注：cheap 通常用于動詞后，若用于動詞前，則用 cheaply。如：
The room was cheaply furnished. 這房間配備了便宜的家具。
