◆examine v.
1. 表示“檢查”，可以指一般性檢查也可指醫(yī)生為病人檢查，可用于人也可用于物。如：
Examine the machine carefully. 仔細(xì)檢查機(jī)器。
My bags were examined when I entered the country. 入境時(shí)我的提包被檢查了。
The doctor examined the patient carefully. 醫(yī)生對病人作了仔細(xì)檢查。
2. 用于 examine sb on (in) sth, 用介詞 in 通常指在某一學(xué)科方面進(jìn)行測試，用介詞 on 通常指在某一問題上進(jìn)行測試。如：
He examined the students in English (Grammar). 他測試學(xué)生的英語(語法)。
I’ll examine you on the work you have done. 我將對所做的工作進(jìn)行測驗(yàn)。
注意以下兩句同義:
老師測試了學(xué)生的化學(xué)。
正：The teacher examined the students in Chemistry.
正：The teacher examined the students on their knowlege of Chemistry.
◆example n.
1. 有兩個(gè)主要意義：例子；榜樣。
(1) 表示給某人舉例，一般用動(dòng)詞 give。如：
Give me an example of what you mean. 給我舉個(gè)例子說明你的意思。
You’ve said there are several suitable machines to dothis job; can you give us any examples? 你說有幾種適合的機(jī)器可以做這項(xiàng)工作，你能給我們舉幾個(gè)例子嗎?
(2) 表示給某人樹立榜樣，一般用 set, 可帶雙賓語，若雙賓語易位，通常用介詞 to。如：
他給我們樹立了一個(gè)好榜樣。
正：He set us a good example.
正：He set a good example to us.
類似下列情況也通常用介詞 to。如：
He was an example to them. 他是他們的榜樣。
His bravery should be an example to all of us. 他的勇敢應(yīng)該成為我們大家學(xué)習(xí)的榜樣。
(3) 表示學(xué)習(xí)某人的榜樣或照某人的樣子，通常用動(dòng)詞 follow 或copy。如：
He is a good example for us to follow. 他是我們學(xué)習(xí)的好榜樣。
I’ll show you how to hit the ball and then you mustfollow [copy] my example. 我先做給你看如何擊球，然后你必須照我的示范去做。
2. for example 意為“例如”，用作插入語，在句中位置比較靈活。如：
I know many women who have a career and a family—for example Alison [Alison for example]. 我知道有許多婦女能兼顧事業(yè)和家庭，比如艾莉森就是其中一例。
Each situation is different. For example, a man with arich wife doesn’t have to work. 情況各有不同，例如，娶了有錢妻子的男人就不必工作。
◆excellent adj.
1. 表示“極好”等義，含有絕對無疑的意味，因此通常只用于肯定句，一般不用于否定句、疑問句或條件句。如：
He speaks excellent French. 他的法語說得相當(dāng)漂亮。
She made an excellent speech. 他作了一次相當(dāng)精彩的演講。
即使在肯定句中，若用了 perhaps, maybe 等表示不確定語氣的語，也最好不用 excellent。如：
Perhaps it is an interesting film. 也許那是一部很有趣的電影(最好不用 excellent 代 interesting)。
2. 表示“極好的”，本身已有“極”、“最”這樣的極限意義，所以一般不用于比較結(jié)構(gòu)，并且一般不用 very, extremely 等副詞修飾。
