◆devote v.
表示“把……獻(xiàn)給(用在)……”，通常只用作及物動(dòng)詞。表示把時(shí)間、金錢(qián)、精力、勞力、生命等奉獻(xiàn)于……，或?qū)Ｐ挠诨蛑铝τ凇３Ｅc介詞 to 連用(注意不要將此介詞誤認(rèn)為是不定式符號(hào))。主要用于以下結(jié)構(gòu)：
1. devote oneself to……
She devoted herself to tennis in her teens. 她少女時(shí)代熱愛(ài)網(wǎng)球。
The man devoted himself to helping the poor. 這個(gè)人致力于幫助窮人。
2. devote sth to……
Please devote more time to your work. 請(qǐng)?jiān)诠ぷ魃隙嗷c(diǎn)時(shí)間。
Mary devoted her life to caring for the sick. 瑪麗獻(xiàn)身于為病人服務(wù)。
3. be devoted to……
He is devoted to himself alone. 他只顧自己。
She is devoted to her children. 她深?lèi)?ài)她的孩子。
This dictionary is devoted to explaining word usage. 這本詞典是解釋詞的用法的。
◆diary n.
表示“寫(xiě)日記”，英語(yǔ)通常用動(dòng)詞 keep, 但有時(shí)也用 write。用不同動(dòng)詞含義稍有差別：keep a diary 側(cè)重指記日記的習(xí)慣(write things in a diary regularly)，而 write a diary則側(cè)重指“寫(xiě)”這一動(dòng)作，因此要表示往日記里寫(xiě)什么東西時(shí)，要用 write。如：
Did you keep a diary while you were traveling in Europe?你在歐洲旅行時(shí)記日記嗎?
He took out his diary and began to write. 他拿出日記本就寫(xiě)了起來(lái)。
He wrote everything he saw in his diary. 他把所看到的情況都寫(xiě)進(jìn)日記里。
有時(shí)兩者都可用。如：
I keep [write] a diary in English. 我用英語(yǔ)寫(xiě)日記。
A diarist is a person who keeps [writes] a diary. 日記作 者即指寫(xiě)日記的人。
◆dictation n.
1. 表示“聽(tīng)寫(xiě)”這一行為或過(guò)程，是不可數(shù)名詞。如：
We have dictation today. 今天我們要聽(tīng)寫(xiě)了。
Dictation makes my throat sore. 聽(tīng)寫(xiě)把我的嗓子讀痛了。
2. 表示“聽(tīng)寫(xiě)”的內(nèi)容或材料，是可數(shù)名詞。如：
Please hand in your dictations. 請(qǐng)把你們的聽(tīng)寫(xiě)(材料)交上來(lái)。
The teacher gave us two dictations today. 老師要我們聽(tīng)寫(xiě)了兩次(或兩份材料)。
◆dictionary n.
漢語(yǔ)中的“查字典”，通常的表達(dá)是：
a. look up sth in a (the) dictionary
b. consult a [the] dictionary
Look up these words in the dictionary. 在字典查查這些詞。
If you want to know how a word is used, look it up in the
dictionary. 你要想知道一個(gè)詞的用法，就去查字典。
He often consulted a dictionary when he read the book. 他讀這本書(shū)時(shí)經(jīng)常查字典。
注：不少人認(rèn)為不能直接說(shuō) look up the dictionary, 其實(shí)這種表達(dá)在現(xiàn)代英語(yǔ)中也可以用，請(qǐng)看以下摘自權(quán)威詞書(shū)的實(shí)例：
I spend more time looking up the dictionary than reading
the book. 我讀這本書(shū)時(shí)查字典的時(shí)間還多些。
