◆fact n.

1. 除極個別的介詞(如 except, but, in等)外，一般的介詞之后均不能直接接 that 從句。如要接，通常的做法是，借助 the fact that 這一結(jié)構(gòu)。如：

She remembered nothing (about him) except that he livesin Paris. 她(對他)什么都不記得，只記得他住在巴黎。

法官根本不理會她剛剛失去丈夫這事實。

誤：The judge paid no attention to that she had just lost her husband.

正：The judge paid no attention to the fact that she had just lost her husband.

2. 為了避免直接用從句放在句首作主語（因為這樣顯得頭重腳輕且太正式)，常用“the fact＋that-從句”這一結(jié)構(gòu)作主語。如：

The fact that he has no girl-friends worried him a lot. 他沒有女朋友，這事使他很傷腦筋。

注：在“the fact＋that-從句”這一結(jié)構(gòu)中，that 引導(dǎo)的是同位語從句，其中的that 不能換為 which。 3. 用于 in fact / as a matter of fact, 意為“事實上”、“實際上”。如：

In fact, he didn’t come at all. 事實上他根本沒有來。

A：You must have told her about it today. 你今天一定把情 況告訴她了。

B：As a matter of fact, I haven’t. 事實上我還沒有。

◆fail v.

1. 表示“失敗”，通常是不及物動詞。表示在某一方面失敗，通常用介詞 in。如：

He failed in business. 他經(jīng)商失敗。

He failed in everything he tried. 他想的一切辦法都沒成功。

2. 表示“(考試)不及格”，fail 可用作及物或不及物動詞(以及物動詞為多見)，所以以下各例中 fail 后的介詞in 均可以省略： He failed (in) his driving-test. 他駕駛考試沒及格。

She failed (in) her exams again. 她考試又沒有及格。

有時表示“使某人不及格”(及物)。如：

The teacher failed half the class. 老師讓班上一半的學(xué)生未能及格。

注：在現(xiàn)代英語中，有時也用介詞 on。如：

I passed the written paper but failed on my oral. 我的書面考試通過了，但口語考試沒有及格。

The teacher failed me on the written paper. 老師給我的筆試評了個不及格。

3. 其后可接不定式，意為“不能”、“沒有”、“忘記”等。如：

He failed to pass the exam. 他考試沒有及格。

He failed to get there on time. 他未能準(zhǔn)時趕到那兒。

Don’t fail to ring me up. 別忘記給我打電話。

表示“不能成功地做某事”，有時可后接 in doing sth。比較:

他未能說服她。

正：He failed to persuade her.

正：He failed in persuading her.
