1. 與不定冠詞連用，表示一個人的全部胡須；用復數(shù)形式，表示不同人的胡須。如：
He has [wears, grows] a long beard. 他留有長胡須。
Not all men have beards. 不是所有的男人都留有胡子。
2. 比較：beard 指下巴上的“胡須”；moustache 指嘴上的“胡須”；whiskers 指腮上的“胡須”。
◆because conj.
1. 表示原因，語氣較強，可用來回答 why 提出的問題。如：
A：Why do you love her? 你為什么愛她?
B：Because she is kind. 因為很善良。
2. because 除經(jīng)常用于引導原因狀語從句外，還可引出表語從句或用于強調(diào)句等。如：
It is because you’re eating too much. 那是因為你吃得太多了。
It’s because he is too young that he has been refused. 他被拒絕是因為他太年輕了。
3. 漢語說“因為……所以……”，但英語卻不能用 because……so 這樣的結構。如：
因為他很忙，所以不能來。
誤：Because he is very busy, so he can’t come.
正：Because he is very busy, he can’t come.
正：He is very busy, so he can’t come.
4. 漢語說“之所以……是因為……”，英語可以類似以下這樣的句型(用 that 比用 because 普通)。如：
The reason (why) I’m late is that [because] I missed thethe bus. 我遲到的原因是因為我沒有趕上公共汽車。
注：傳統(tǒng)語法認為這類句型不能用 because, 但在現(xiàn)代英語中用because 的情形已很普遍。
5. 在 not……because……這一結構中，not 有時否定主句，有時否定從句，具體視語境而定。一般說來，若 not 否定主句，最好在because 之前用逗號，否則會引起歧義，如下句在沒有特定上下文時就有兩種解釋：
I didn’t go because I was afraid.
a. 我沒有去是因為怕。
b. 我不是因為怕才去。
但是若 because 之前有 just 修飾，一般認為 not 是否定從句而不是主句。如：
You shouldn’t get angry just because some people speak ill of you. 你不要因為有人說你壞話而生氣。
6. 用于 because of(用作復合介詞)，其后可接名詞、代詞、 動名詞、what 從句(但不能是 that 從句或沒有引導詞的從句)等。如：
He is here because of you (that). 他為你(那事)而來這里。
We said nothing about it, because of his wife’s being there. 因為他妻子在那兒，我們對此只字未提。
He left the company because of what the boss said at the
meeting. 他離開了這家公司，是因為老板在會上講的話。
注：because of 所引導的介詞短語通常用作狀語而不能用作表語(除非主語是代詞)。如：
誤：His absence was because of the rain. 他因雨缺席。
正：It is just because of money. 那只是因為錢的原因。
◆become v.
1. 用作連系動詞，其后可接名詞、形容詞、過去分詞等作表語。如：
They became great friends. 他們成了莫逆之交。
He soon became angry. 他過了一會兒就生氣了。
At last the truth became known to us. 我們終于知道了真相。
2. 其后一般不接不定式。如：
他開始對生物感興趣了。
誤：He became to be interested in biology.
正：He became interested in biology.
于是我們開始喜歡他了。
誤：Then we became to like him.
正：Then we began [came] to like him.
