◆direction n.

1. 表示“方向”或“方面”，是可數(shù)名詞。表示“朝……方向或在……方面”，通常與介詞 in 連用。如：

Tom went in off in one direction and Jack in another. 湯姆往一個方向走，杰克往另外一個方向走。

Reforms are needed in many directions. 許多方面需要改革。

另外注意以下搭配：

(1) in the direction of 朝……的方向(=towards)。如：

He is walking in the direction of the police station. 他正朝警察局的方向走去。

(2) in sb’s direction 朝某人的方向(=towards sb)。如：

He glanced in her direction and their eyes met. 他朝她這個方向一看，倆人的眼睛相遇了。

2. 表示“指導(dǎo)”或“指揮”，是不可數(shù)名詞。表示“在……的指導(dǎo)下”，與介詞 under 連用。如：

We work under his direction. 我們在他的指導(dǎo)下工作。

The singing group is under the direction of Mr Lee. 歌唱團(tuán)由李先生指揮。

3. 表示“指示”、“指引”、“用法說明”等，通常要用復(fù)數(shù)形式。如：

He gave us directions to the railway station. 他告訴我們?nèi)ボ囌驹趺醋摺?/p>

Follow the directions on the medicine bottle. 請按藥瓶上的服法說明服藥。

注：表示郵件上的“姓名地址”，也用復(fù)數(shù)形式。如：

The parcel was returned to the sender because the directions were incorrect. 包裹因姓名地址有誤而被退給了寄件人。

◆directly adv.

1. 表示“直接地”，與“間接地”相對，指沒有中間環(huán)節(jié)的影響等。如：

The new law won’t directly affect us. 新的法律不會直接影響我們。

還可表示“直率地”、“直截了當(dāng)?shù)亍�。如�?/p>

He answered me very directly and openly. 他非常坦率地回答了我。

He refused to say directly what he thinks. 他拒絕直接了當(dāng)?shù)卣f出他的想法。

2. 表示“恰好”、“正好”。如：

He lives directly opposite the church. 他住在教堂的正對面。

3. 在英國英語中，既可表示“立即”、“馬上”，也可表示“不久以后”。如：

Come here directly. 馬上過來。

I will be there directly. 我很快就到。

在沒有特定上下文的情況下，可能有歧義。如：

I will start directly. 我馬上動身(或:我不久將動身)。

4. 在英國英語中，可用作連詞(＝as soon as)。如：

I went home directly I had finished work. 我一干完工作就回家了。
