◆else adv.

1. 表示“別的”、“其他的”，通常放在下列詞語之后:

(1) much, little, all(=everything)，a lot, a great deal 等；

(2) 以 -one, -body, -thing, -where 結尾的詞；

(3) who, what, where, how, why 等疑問詞。

Who else was at the party? 晚會上還有誰?

Where else did you go?　你還去過什么別的地方?

Have you anythig else to do? 你還有別的什么事要做嗎?

Ask somebody else to help you. 請別人幫幫你吧。

Not much else is known. 其他的不太很清楚。

We went to the cinema and nowhere else. 我們?nèi)ル娪霸毫耍瑳]到別的什么地方去。

注：else 通常不放在 which 之后，如：

誤：Which else do you like?

2. else 可以有所有格形式(else’s)。如：

He was wearing someone else’s coat. 他穿著別人的外套。

It couldn’t be anybody else’s. 那不能是別人的。

注：else 一般不用在 whose 之后，遇此情況可用 who else’s。如：

Who else’s fault could it be? 這會是其他什么人的錯嗎?

但若 who else’s 后不接名詞，有時也可用 whose else。如：

I don’t know who else’s [whose else] it could be. 我不知道那是別的什么人的。

3. 與 or 連用，表示“否則”，“要不然”。若用在句末（即其后不接其他詞)，則常帶有一種威協(xié)的口氣。如：

Run or else you’ll be late. 快跑，不要就要遲到了。

Give me the money, or else! 把錢給我，不然的話，哼!

◆encourage v.

1. 表示“鼓勵”、“支持”，表示鼓勵某人做某事，通常后接不定式的復合結構作賓語。如：

The teacher encouraged us to study hard. 老師鼓勵我們努力學習。

My parents encouraged me to apply for the job. 我父母鼓勵我去申請這份工作。

2. 表示在某一方面鼓勵或支持某人，通常是用 encourage sb insth。如：

The boss encouraged me in my work. 老板鼓勵我努力工作。

Don’t encourage him in his idleness. 不要助長他的惰性。

3. 比較 encouraged 與 encouraging：前者表示“受到鼓勵或鼓舞的”，后者表示“令人鼓舞的”。如：

The news is very encouraging. 這個消息令人鼓舞。

They were encouraged at [by] the news. 這個消息使他們大受鼓舞。
