◆describe v.
表示“描述”，通常只用作及物動詞，用法注意：
1. 除接名詞作賓語外，還通常接 wh-從句。如：
Words can’t describe her beauty. 言語無法形容她的美麗。
It’s difficult to describe how I feel. 很難描述我的感受。
Please describe exactly what happened. 發(fā)生了什么事，請原原本本說出來。
2. 不接雙賓語。若語義需要，可用介詞 to/for 引出間接賓語。
如：
你能將你所見到的情況描述給我聽聽嗎?
誤：Can you describe me what you saw?
正：Can you describe what you saw to me?
正：Can you describe to me what you saw?
3. 表示“把……形容為(說成是)……”，通常與 as 連用。如：
She described him as shy. 她說他很害羞。
He describes himself as an aritist. 他自稱是藝術(shù)家。
He was described as (being) very clever. 據(jù)說他很聰明。
4. 在現(xiàn)代英語中，其后可接動名詞。如：
He described going downstairs and finding his motherlying on the floor. 他描述了他走下樓梯，發(fā)現(xiàn)他母親躺在地板上。
◆determine v.
1. 表示“決心”、“決定”，是及物動詞，其后可接：
(1) 名詞或代詞。如：
We’ll have to determine a date for the meeting. 我們得確定會議日期。
(2) 不定式。如：
He determined to go to the front. 他決定去前線。
有時不定式前可用連接代詞(副詞)。如：
I haven’t determined what to do next. 下一步干什么我還沒決定。
(3) 不定式的復合結(jié)構(gòu)。如：
What determined her to marry him? 是什么使她下定決心要嫁給他?
(4) 從句。如：
He determined that he should stay. 他決定留下。
We haven’t determined who will go with them. 我們還沒有作出決定讓誰同他們一起去。
2. 用于 be determined＋不定式或從句。如：
I am determined to go and nothing will stop me. 我已決定要去，什么也阻止不了我。
My mother is determined that I shall [should] marry thesinger. 我母親決意要我嫁給這位歌手。
比較下面兩句在含義上的差別：
I have determined to go abroad. 我已決定出國。
I am determined to go abroad. 我已下定決心要出國。
在前一句里，determine 是界限動詞，強調(diào)一時的動作；在第二句里，determined 用作形容詞，說明的是一種狀態(tài)，即一種堅定不移的決心。
3. 用于 determine on [upon]，表示“決心”、“決定”。如：
I determined on an early start. 我決定早點出發(fā)。
I dertermined on going abroad. 我決定出國。
◆develop v.
1. 基本義為“發(fā)展”，若表示“(由……)發(fā)展成為……”，通常與介詞 from, into 等連用。如：
The argument developed into a bitter quarrel. 這場辯論逐漸變成了激烈的爭吵。
Land animals are thought to have developed from seaanimals. 陸地動物被認為是從海洋動物進化而來的。
比較：
Plants develop from seeds. 植物從種子長成。
Seeds develop into plants. 種子長成植物。
2. 比較 developing 與 developed：前者指“發(fā)展中的”，后者指“發(fā)達的”。如：
The United States is a developed country while China isa developing one. 美國是一個發(fā)達國家，而中國是一個發(fā)展中國家。
