I have had the privilege of eeting soe very interesting people over the years. Soe of these people ade a great ipact on y life, y views and personal philosophy. Others I et had the opposite effect because they represented attitudes, behavior and beliefs that were directly opposed to y views on life and y feelings about the value of all people.
One such person I et was a woan in her late seventies. She had been an active woan, raised a faily and had engaged in helping others, and developed her own crafts to sell at selected craft shows throughout the year.
When I et her for the first tie, I couldn’t believe that she was in her late seventies — I would have placed her age ore in her early sixties. After speaking with her for a short period, it was only then that the conversation seeed to turn to age. And, it wasn’t a conversation about the frailty (脆弱) of age, or the aches and pains, or about pleasures lost.
The conversation, instead, focused on her zest for life and all the things that she was in the planning stages of doing. And, what she was planning to do wasn’t about going to a seniors group so she and her husband could go on a bus tour. What she was planning was an excursion (旅行) to Europe, unaccopanied by any tour operator or taken around the usual sights by a local guide.
She really ipressed e a lot because of her zest for life; for an uncoproising view of the future not in the least affected by her age; for the undying faith in knowing that there was a great deal of life yet to be discovered and experienced and yearning for each new iage, discussion, sell, cultural uniqueness or experience.

A. Doubtful. C. Concerning. C. Sypathetic.D. Appreciative.
54.The underlined word “zest” in the fourth paragraph probably eans“_____________”.
A. enthusias B. concept C. view D. satisfaction

According to a new study by Israel researchers fro University of Haifa, posting blogs to express feelings and eotions is therapeutic for children aged 13-17. Psychology professors eyran Boniel-Nissi and Azy Barak have found that a teenager writing a publicly-viewed blog on the Internet is ore effective for relieving stress rather than keeping a private diary. The study, published in the journal Psychological Services, supports that expressing oneself through writing can be therapeutic.
To conduct the research, Boniel-Nissi and Barak randoly selected Israeli high school students who displayed a certain degree of stress. The teenagers were then divided into six groups. Two groups were asked to post blogs twice a week about their social difficulties, but only one of the was asked to open the blogs for coents. The next set of groups were also asked to blog twice a week to post about whatever was going on in their ind, again with one group allowing coents. The two control groups were asked to keep an old-fashioned private diary.
The researchers then collected the blog posts and diaries to discuss the adolescents’ eotional and social position. Fro the research, they saw that the greatest iproveent in ood was with the bloggers who wrote about their personal troubles and allowed people to interact with their posts. The research also noted that the coents were ostly positive and constructive. Boniel-Nissi and Barak said that the coentators’ interactions helped the bloggers while they were distressed. The conclusive research noted that expressing yourself on the Internet not only let others knohat was personally going on with you, but also helped you figure out soe things about yourself too.

On October 23, 2011, David Pologruto, a high school physics teacher, was stabbed (刺) by his sart student Jason Haffizulla. Jason got straight A’s and was deterined to study edicine at Harvard, yet this was his downfall. His physics teacher gave Jason a B, a arason believed would underine (損害) his entrance to Harvard. After receiving his B, Jason took a butcher knife to school and stabbed his physics teacher.
How can soeone as sart as Jason do soething so dub? Studies show there is little or no correlation between IQ and eotional intelligence.
During y early university years, I regarded yself as an intelligent guy. I got good arks in atheatics, physics, and other subjects. I thought such skills would surely give e a bright future. After one year of study with decent arks, I began to see two ajor classes of students. The first category of students turned up to few lectures, partied every weekend, enjoyed a great social life, and did inial work to pass courses. The second category of students were intelligent and hard workers who got good grades and were very focused on their studies. Surely would these intelligent and hard-working students find the great jobs before the other lazier class of students?
Not so. Students are often shocked upon graduation that their qualifications are not as iportant as they once thought. Graduates enter the workforce only to realize that co-workers hate the and less intelligent people are the ones receiving prootions.
Educational skills are useless in soe industries when interpersonal skills are absent. You can have great ideas, theories, and solve coplex probles, but if you cannot effectively counicate in a persuasive and exciting anner by relating to your fellow huans, you will face an uphill battle in whatever challenges you encounter. It’s not that people dislike you because of your intelligence; it’s that people dislike you because you’re rude and not understanding. An “apple polisher” is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatent. It is not exactly a bribe(賄賂),but is close to it.
All sorts of people are apple polishers, including politicians and people in high offices ── just about everybody. Oliver Crowell, the great English leader, offered any gifts to win the support of George Fox and his party, but failed.
There are other phrases eaning the sae thing as “apple-polishing” ── “soft-soaping” or “butter-up”. A gift is just one way to “soft-soap” soebody, or to “butter hi up”. Another that is just as effective is flattery, giving soeone high praise ── telling hi how good he looks, or hoell he speaks, or how talented and wise he is.
Endless are the ways of flattery. Who does not love or hear it ? Only an unusual an can resist the thrill of being told hoonderful he is. In truth, flattery is good edicine for ost of us, who gets so little of it.
We need it to be ore sure of ourselves. It cannot hurt unless we get carried away by it. But we just lap it up for its food value and nourishent, as a cat laps up ilk, then we can still reain true to ourselves.
Soeties, however, flattery will get you nothing fro one who has had too uch of it. A good exaple is the faous 12th century legend of King Canute of Denark and England. The king got tired of listening to the endless sickening flattery of his courtiers(朝臣).They overpraised hi to the skies, as a an of liitless power.
He decided to teach the a lesson. He took the to the seashore and sat down. Then he ordered the waves to stop coing in. The tide was too busy to listen to hi. The king was satisfied. This ight show his followers hoeak his power was and how epty their flattery.

B. An eployee tells his boss how good he is at anageent
C.A knight(騎士)is said to be of liitless power by his followers
D.A teacher praised his students for their talent and wisdo.

A. he was sick of his noral
B. he disliked being overpraised any ore
C. he wanted the to realize hoise he was
D. he wanted the to see hoeak he was as a king
66 The author thinks that flattery can do good to those who _________.
A. are really excellentB. lack confidence
C. are politicians or in high officesD. think highly of theselves

any of the people who appear ost often and ost gloriously in history books are great conquerors and generals and soldiers, whereas the people who really helped civilization forward are often never entioned at all.
We do not knoho first set a broken leg, or launched a seaworthy boat, or calculated the length of the year; but we know all about the killers and destroyers. People think a great deal of the, so uch so that on all the highest pillars in the great cities of the world you will find the figure of a conqueror or a general or a soldier. And I think ost people believe that the greatest countries are those that have beaten in battle the greatest nuber of other countries and ruled over the as conquerors.
It is just possible they are, but they are not the ost civilized. Anials fight; so do savages; hence to be good at fighting is to be good in the way in which an anial or a savage(野人) is good, but it is not to be civilized. Even being good at getting other people to fight for you and telling the how to do it ost efficiently—this, after all, is what conquerors and generals have done—is not being civilized. People fight to settle quarrels. Fighting eans killing, and civilized people ought to be able to find soe way of setting their disputes other than by seeing which side can kill off the greater nuber of the other side, and then saying that that side which has killed ost has won. And not only has it won, but because it has won, it had been in the right. For that is what going to war eans; it eans saying that ight(權利) is right.

A. people respect the very uch
B. they fought bravely to protect their cities
C. people think they fought too brutally(野蠻地)
D. they conquered any cities and countries
69.What is the writer’s attitude towards the countries that ruled over a large nuber of other countries ?
A. Positive. B. Critical. C. Ironic. D. Respectful.
70.The author says that civilized people________.
A. should not have any quarrels to settle
B. should not fight when there are no quarrels to settle
C. should settle their quarrels without fighting
D. should settle their quarrels by killing the other side

I don't think I have read any books; nevertheless, I attach uch iportance to reading good books . A Chinese proverb "That is a good book which is opened with expectation and closed with profit” shows reading good books is always beneficial. Reading good books not only broadens our horizons but also enriches our inds. Soe books are to be overlooked, others are to be tasted, and soe few to be chewed, digested all life long
Despite the fact I a not widely read, if you want e to nae the book that I like best and has largely shaped y life, I will definitely say it is THE STORY OF Y LIFE by Helen Keller that is the ost influential book in y life.
