I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago whose husband unexpectedly died of a heart attack.About a week after his death, she shared some of her thoughts with a classroom of students.
As the late afternoon sunlight came in through the classroom windows and the class was nearly over, she moved a few things aside on her desk and sat down there. With a gentle look of reflection (沉思) on her face, she said, “Before class is over, I would like to share with all of you a thought that has nothing to do with our class today, but I think it is very important. Each of us is put here on earth to learn, share, love and enjoy. None of us knows when this fantastic experience will end. It can be taken away at any moment.”
Her eyes beginning to water, she went on:“So I would like you all to make me a promise. From now on, on your way to school, or on your way home, find something beautiful to notice. It doesn’t have to be something you see, it could be a scent--perhaps of newly baked (烤) bread coming out of someone’s kitchen, or it could be the sound of the soft wind slightly touching the leaves in the trees...”
The class was completely quiet. We all picked up our books and went out of the room one by one silently. That afternoon, I noticed more things on my way home from school than I had in a whole term….

Every country has a holiday to honor mothers and their influence on society. The most common day for this celebration is the second Sunday in May.
The idea to have a holiday just for celebrating mothers comes from many stories. However, it was the influence of women in the US that really set the stage for this holiday. The modern American holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial (紀(jì)念儀式) for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. Her idea to make “Mother’s Day” a holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her beloved mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Anna’s mother was a peace lover who had cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War (內(nèi)戰(zhàn)). Anna was the first to fight for Mother’s Day becoming an official holiday. She finally succeeded in 1914.
Celebrating Mother’s Day is quite different around the world. In China, it is just starting to become popular. Carnations (康乃馨) are the most popular Mother’s Day gift and the most sold flowers because of the holiday. On Mother’s Day in Canada there are usually small celebrations and gift-giving to one’s mother, grandmother, or other important female members in one’s family. In Bangladesh, special TV shows, news reports, and gatherings are organized. In the old days in France, mothers of large families were given medals.
No matter how Mother’s Day is spent, the need to recognize (認(rèn)出,識(shí)別) the most important person, who brought you into this world is something everyone agrees on.
Answer the following questions. (No more than eight words)
46. On what day is the most common day to honor mothers and their influence on society?

The television is good. You’d like to watch it all day and all night. But watching too much TV is a very bad thing, especially for kids. It may negatively (消極地) affect their study and health.
Scientists have found that kids who watch too much TV may have more trouble learning to read than other kids. They may have worse language skills. Kids learn language skills best by reading, talking and playing with others. If they spend too much time watching TV, they’ll have less time for those things. It may make it harder for them to get on well with others when they grow up.
Watching too much TV is also harmful to kids’ health. It’s bad for their eyes. Kids don’t move much while watching TV. What’s more, they may eat a lot of food while watching TV. This can make them fat. We call people who watch too much TV “couch potatoes”.
Fighting on TV is another big problem for kids. An American child can watch a lot of fighting acts on TV every year. Young people are good at following others. Scientists say that those who watch a lot of fighting shows are more likely to fight.
So listen to the scientists. Watch TV for one or two hours a day at most or try to turn off your TV for a week every month. There are lots of fun things to do.

八、書(shū)面表達(dá)(20分)
Last week our school had a discussion on How to keep students away from too many computer games. The students have different opinions.
They think that their school may have class meetings to help them realize the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet. Also, good out-school activities should be held regularly in their school, such as having a sports meeting every term and organizing a school trip every year. Besides, teachers can communicate with those students who are crazy about games and those who often lose themselves in chatting online as often as possible.
When they are at home, they think parents should set examples to them. Fathers and mothers must spend less time on their mobile phones. And then they are able to spare time for their kids and even stay with them most of the time. Working closely with schools is another important way for parents to help them.
As students, just as the saying goes:“Study must come first”. They should pay more attention on their studies. They ought to try their best to achieve a balance between play and studies.
