One day I got into a taxi and we took off for the airport.
We were driving in the right way when suddenly a black jeep jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver had to stop the car at once, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car started shouting at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy, and I mean, he was really friendly.
So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost destroyed your car and sent us to the hospital!” This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage(垃圾) Truck.”
He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of anger. As their garbage gets more, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you. Don’t take it seriously. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their garbage and pass it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

For five days, Edmonton’s Downtown Park is changed into one really large stage where artists are able to share their talents, and where people are able to celebrate and enjoy themselves. Since its beginning in 1980, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival(鄉(xiāng)村音樂節(jié)) has been celebrating with the true feeling of what folk music is all about and that’s the traditional togetherness(友愛) that is felt when people get together to share stories and feelings through songs.
This year will be the sixth year when volunteer Riedel will be offering up her time to the festival. “People coming off a busy spring and summer have a moment of relaxation,” Riedel said. “It’s really easy to relax, and it’s great seeing f amily and friends have fun together.” These families and friends come from all different kinds of musical tastes. People who take pleasure in Blues are there, so are people who love Bluegrass. This festival does its best to develop everyone’s musical interests.
With so many years of experience, the festival has become a well-oiled machine, and does whatever it can to make those people who attend it feel as comfortable as possible. There are free water stations throughout the venue(舉辦地 ) for people to fill up their travel cups. When people buy food, reusable dishes are given a $2 plate fee(費用), but that is returned when the plate is brought back.
The festival has completely sold out of tickets, and in record time. But with big names such as Van Morrison and Jakob Dylan, it’s easy to see how that was going to happen. There is no parking area during the festival, so using the Park & Ride system or Edmonton Transit is highly recommended. A bike lock-up area is provided and people may use the bikes there from Thursday to Sunday one hour before the gates open until 45 minutes after the gates close.
The Edmonton Folk Music Festival begins on Wednesday, Aug 4th with Van Morrison playing the special donation fund concert, and will finish up on Sunday, Aug 8th.

Have you ever dreamed about flying in the sky in your own flying car? It would be wonderful to fly at will. You would not need to spend hours in traffic every day. You could also travel large distances very quickly. Since the Wright brothers built their airplane in 1903, several pioneers have worked to invent a flying car. According to car industry experts(專家), the dream of flying cars will soon be real.
An engineer named Paul Moller recently invented such a car. Moller has spent almost 40 years and millions of dollars developing his prototype. The car which has room for four people is designed to take off and land in small spaces and can fly as high as 10,000 meters. It uses four external engines(外部引擎) to move up, down, and sideways. The car, unluckily, can’t fly very far because it needs much fuel(燃料). Moller’s car is guided by computers and satellite systems. He showed that a car could be built to fly.
A flying car society has many problems to solve. The first thing is safety. If there are no roads, what will stop people from crashing into each other? It is easy for one car to travel, but what happens when there are thousands? Another thing is cost. At the moment, it costs several million dollars for one year. How can people have so much money to buy them? The third thing is fuel. There needs to be enough fuel for these cars to use. The fuel also needs to be less polluting than the kind we use now. Still, technology gets more advanced(先進的). It is likely that these problems will be solved in a few years. Then, dreams of quick and easy flight will be real.
34. What is the main cause for Paul Moller to invent a flying car?
A. Because he wanted to set a good example for those pioneers.
B. Because he wanted to solve some traffic problems for the policemen.
C. Because he wanted to show people that a car could be built to fly.
D. Because he wanted to get a lot of money by inventing a fantastic new thing.
35. The underlined word “prototype” in the passage is closest in meaning to ________.
A. programB. formC. modelD. engine
36. According to the passage, all the following are true EXCEPT ________.
A. scientists will probably solve the problems of flying cars as technology gets more advanced
B. it is not possible for Moller’s car to fly far
C. flying cars will be used in five years
D. flying cars cost a lot of money right now
37. Based on the information in the passage, what can be inferred(推斷) about flying cars?
A. They offer a number of advantages over normal cars.
B. Famous people will buy flying cars when they come out.
C. The fuel of flying cars is more polluting.
D. They will cost too much money in a few years.
