Scientists in the US are busy looking for new things that are better than mosquito spray at keeping mosquitoes away. While one scientist looked at a mosquito’s stomach, he found something interesting. Mosquitoes have a chemical in their stomachs. The chemical tells them when to stop eating. This chemical is a lot like a chemical found in tomatoes.
Scientists also found adding tomato juice to a person’s skin keeps mosquitoes away. Most mosquito sprays have a chemical called DEET. DEET keeps 78 per cent of mosquitoes away. However, tomatoes keep 91 percent away.
So, the next time you think about spraying on that mosquito spray, think again. Why not just cut a tomato in half and run it all over your skin?

Zack told his teacher that, as far as he knew, there was only one place where people can find such an unusual shell. On a beach more than 32km away from the school, such shells would sometimes be washed onto the beach.
The teacher said, “Zack, it is really so beautiful that I will treasure it all my life, but it’s too dangerous for you to go so far to bring me back a gift. You shouldn’t do that.”

Did you ever wonder how typhoons (臺(tái)風(fēng)) get their names?
It all started in Australia in the early 1900s. An Australian weatherman didn’t like some of his country’s leaders. 76 This way, he could say that they were causing great trouble to the country.
Later, American weathermen named typhoons after their girlfriends or wives during World War II. Women’s names continued to be used for storms after the war. 77
A list was made and new storms were named from this list in alphabetical order. The names were all Western ones, until January 1st, 2000. 78 This typhoon name list had many Asian names from different Asian countries. 79 . Most of the names were of flowers, animals, trees, and even food!
What do you think of a typhoon named Kimchi? 80 So these days, that’s why typhoons have such interesting names!

第二卷

Do you know what “OMG” means when you receive a piece of text message like this? It means “oh my god”. It seems that this kind of “text language” is becoming more and more popular. Here are some top ones -- IDK(I don’t know), BRB (be right back), gr8 (great), ASAP(as soon as possible). It’s a lot easier to use “text language” when we text. An American teen usually sends 60 text messages a day, and most of them are full of this kind of “text language”.
There’s a hot discussion that text messaging can have a bad effect on people’s grammar. Many believe the “text language” is giving students bad habits when it comes to spelling.
But some people say that text messaging has no bad effect at all. Many people regard it as a language of its own. It is just like students learning a foreign language. This doesn’t have an effect on their native(本國(guó)的) language.
Whether it’s bad or not, it seems that text language is becoming more and more popular among the young. In 2014, an American study named Writing, Technology and Teens says that 64 percent of teens said they used informal “text language” when they were doing their writing homework.
But it’s not just a matter of language. Some American scientists did another study. The study showed that students who often text during class have some difficulty paying attention to their lessons. This has a bad effect on their learning.
