“Everything happens for the best,” my mother said whenever things weren’t going my way. “Don’t worry, one day your luck will change.” Mother was right, as I found after I had finished my college education. I had decided to try for a job in radio. One day, I wanted to host(主持) a sports program. I went to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station. But I got turned down every time.
In one station, a kind lady said my problem was that I hadn’t got enough experience. “Get some work with a small station and work your way up,” she said.
I went back home. I couldn’t get a job there, either. Then my dad told me a businessman had opened a store and needed someone to help him. But again, I didn’t get the job.
I felt really down. “Your luck will change,” Mom said to me. Dad lent me the car to help me to look for my job. I tried another radio station in Iowa. But the owner, a nice man, told me he had already had someone. As I left his office, I asked, “How can someone be a sports announcer(播音員) if he can’t get a job in a radio station?”
I was waiting for the lift when I heard the man call. “ What did you mean? Do you know anything about football?” He put me in front of a microphone and asked me to try to imagine that I was giving my opinion on a football game, I succeeded.
On my way home, Mom’s words came back to me, “One day your luck will change, Son. And when it happens, it’ll feel doubly(加倍的) good because of all the hard work you’ve had.” At that moment I knew what just what she meant.

Foreign visitors are often puzzled in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is just across the bus stop.”
In the Midwest of America, usually there are not many landmarks. So people will tell you directions(方向) and distance. In Kansas(堪薩斯州), for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.” People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map. They measure(測量) distance by telling time. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.
People in Greece(希臘) sometimes do not even try to give directions because few visitors understand the Greek language. Instead of giving you the direction, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.” Then he’ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.
Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to your question. A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico(墨西哥), no one answers “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan think “I don’t know” is not polite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor can get very, very lost in Yucatan!
One thing will help you everywhere. You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his body language. He or she will usually turn and then point in the correct direction. Go on in that direction, and you may find the post office!
( )57. What do you think of the word “l(fā)andmarks” mean?

C.Buildings or places which are easily seen.
D.Buildings or places with great importance.
( )58. How many countries are mentioned(提及到) by the writer?
A.Four. B.Five. C.Seven. D.Eight.
( )59. Which of the following is NOT right?
A.The Japanese often use landmarks when they give directions.
B.People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance.
C.People in Yucatan think “I don’t know” is not polite.
D.People in Greece often give wrong directions.
( )60. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.There are not many landmarks in the Midwest of America.
B.We needn’t carry a map when we travel around the world.
C.People give directions in the same way in different parts of the world.
D.There are different ways to give directions in different parts of the world.

The weather is usually quite good and there aren’t too many visitors in October. We did most of our sightseeing on foot. We went to look at the places that all visitors see. What we liked most was going to the theatre. We don’t have the chance to see such wonderful plays at home. A lot of people say English food is very bad. We didn’t think so. It’s true that most of the restaurants are French, Italian or Chinese , but we had some very good meals.

You have to read the questions carefully before answering them. Don’t forget to write the answers clearly. If there is a difficult question, don’t worry. Go on to the next one and come back to it if you have time. Try not to leave questions unanswered when you finish the test. Sometimes a guess may be helpful. Mr Chaplin and I wish you good results.

聽力材料:
1. W: How is your father?
M: He has been ill for three years. Now he is still in hospital.
2. W: Is it still raining outside?
M: No, but the wind is still blowing hard.
3. M: How was the meeting, Sandy?
W: The meeting was good, but the trip wasn’t. I didn’t sleep well on the train.
4. M: Look. What terrible water!
W: Now water pollution is almost everywhere in our country. We must do something to stop it.
5. M: You speak good English. Are you from America?
W: No, I’m from Germany. But I studied in Canada for five years.
6. M: Do you like monkeys, Lisa?
W: Yes, of course. They are so clever. In fact, I like many kinds of animals, such as pandas, elephants and cats. But my favourite is dogs.
7. W: What were you doing while I was away?
M: Look at the room. It is clean.
8. M: I was not here yesterday because my mother was ill. I had to look after her.
W: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. You’re a good boy. Go back to your seat and join us. Please turn to page 26. We’re learning the dialogue.
9. W: Have David and Tina left?
M: Not yet. David says he’d like to leave next Monday. But Tina wants to leave next Wednesday.
10. M: Oh, no! It’s eight o’clock, but I haven’t finished my task.
W: Don’t worry. The clock is thirty minutes fast.
11-12. W: Last Sunday I got up very early.
M: When did you have breakfast?
W: I had breakfast at 6:45.
M: What did you do next?
W: Then I hurried to school to learn how to use the computer. My teacher helped me. At noon I had lunch with Jane in a restaurant near my school.
M: Where did you go after lunch?
W: I went to a bookshop to buy some books with Jane. Then we said goodbye to each other. As soon as I came home, I helped my mother to do some housework.
M: You had a busy day!
13-15 My friends and I spent a few weeks in London last year. We went in autumn. We think it’s the best season to visit England.

Dear students,
May I have your attention, please? Mr Chaplin can't be here because he has gone to America for a teachers’ training course. He asked me to tell you something about today’s English exam. The exam starts at 9 o’clock this morning. It lasts for 2 hours. It’s an important exam. Before you answer the questions, relax yourselves.
