1. break away (from)
(1) 突然逃掉或離開。如:
The thief broke away from the policeman. 小偷從警察那逃脫了。
(2) 斷絕往來,脫離。如:
He broke away from all his old friends. 他同他所有的老朋友斷絕了往來。
(3) 改掉(舊習(xí)慣),破除(舊作法)。如:
You must break away from such habits. 你必須改掉那些習(xí)慣。
2. break down
(1) (機(jī)器、車輛等)壞了。如:
The car broke down after an hour’s driving. 車子開了一個小時就壞了。
(2) (計(jì)劃、談判等)失敗。如:
Our plans have broken down. 我們的計(jì)劃已失敗了。
(3) (談話、通訊等)中斷。如:
He broke down as he was singing. 他沒唱完就突然停住了。
(4) (健康、精神等)變壞。如:
Her health broke down under the pressure of work. 工作的壓力把他的身體弄垮了。
3. break in
(1) 突然進(jìn)來,強(qiáng)行進(jìn)入。如:
He broke in and stole my money. 他闖進(jìn)來偷了我的錢。
(2) 插嘴,打岔。如:
He broke in with some ideas of his own. 他插話談了自己的一些想法。
Please don’t break in on our conversation. 請不要打斷我們的談話。
The secretary broke in to say that a telegram had just arrived. 秘書插話說剛收到一個電報(bào)。
注:以上用法的 break in 通常是不及物的,但有時也用作及物動詞,帶賓語,表示:訓(xùn)練某人(物),使某人(物)適應(yīng)。如:
He is breaking in the new man as a machine operator. 我在訓(xùn)練那個新工人操作機(jī)器。
Two weeks in the new office should be enough to break you in. 在新辦公室上兩星期的班便足以讓你適應(yīng)了。
4. break into
(1) 強(qiáng)行進(jìn)入。如:
The thieves planned to break into a bank. 這些小偷計(jì)劃闖銀行。
(2) 突然……起來。如:
Hearing the news, she broke into tears. 聽到這個消息,她就哭了起來。
The man broke into a run when he saw the police. 那個人一看到警察,撥腿就跑。
(3) 打斷,插嘴。如:
He broke into the discussion with a shout of warning. 他大聲警告,打斷了討論。
(4) 占用時間。如:
Social activities break into my time. 社會活動占去了我的時間。
注:break into 與 break in 的有時可表示相同的意思,但前者通常為及物的,后者通常為不及物的。
5. break off
(1) 停止講話。如:
He broke off in the middle of a sentence. 他一句話沒講完就停住了。
(2) 暫停,休息。如:
Let’s break up for a rest. 我們休息一會兒吧。
(3) (使)折斷。如:
The mast has (been) broken off. 桅桿折斷了。
6. break out (火災(zāi)、戰(zhàn)爭等)突然發(fā)生或爆發(fā)。如:
A fire broke out during the night. 夜間發(fā)生了火災(zāi)。
The 2nd World War broke out in September, 1939. 第二次世界大戰(zhàn)爆發(fā)于1939年9月。
Influenza usually breaks out in winter. 流感通常發(fā)生在冬季。

7. break through
(1) 突破,有重要創(chuàng)見。如:
Scientists say they’re beginning to break through in the fight against cancer. 科學(xué)家們說,他們在防治癌癥方面開始有所突破。
(2) 克服,征服。如:
You must try to break through your shyness. 你必須要設(shè)法克服羞怯。
(3) 強(qiáng)行穿過(進(jìn)入)。如:
The enemy’s defences were strong but our soldiers broke through. 敵人的防線很艱固,但仍為我軍所突破。
注:有時指太陽、月亮等從云層里出來。如:
The sun broke through at last in the afternoon. 下午太陽終于從云層里鉆了出來。
8. break up
(1) 解散,驅(qū)散。如:
The police broke up the crowd (the meeting). 警察驅(qū)散了人群(集會)。
(2) (學(xué)校等)放假。如:
When do you break up for Christmas? 你們什么時候放圣誕節(jié)假?
(3) 結(jié)束,破裂。如:
The weather shows signs of breaking up. 好天氣看樣要過去了。
Their marriage is breaking up. 他們的婚姻瀕臨破裂。
(4) 擊碎,撞碎。如:
The ship broke up on the rocks. 船觸礁撞毀了。
(5) 絕交。如:
She’s just broken up with her boy-friend. 她剛與男朋友絕交。
