My friend Robert started a new job this week and he’s been in the training class for two days. The employer has a very strict dress code—dark blue shirts and pants.
On the first day, an older gentleman in his class did not have the proper clothes and he was strictly told that he would be fired if he didn’t have the right clothes the next day. He explained, “Sir, I had not been told about this. Because of my larger size, it’s sometimes difficult to find the right clothing for a price I can afford.”
Last night, Robert and I decided that this old man shouldn’t lose the chance of work simply because he couldn’t afford the clothes. I had some cash on hand and Robert took it with him this morning just in case it was needed.
When training started this morning, the trainer was ready to fire the older gentleman. “You have 10 minutes to be in proper clothes,” he was told. At this point, Robert spoke up and asked if he could have 10 minutes to get him the clothes. He then ran out to the store and bought the proper-sized pants and a shirt; he returned with both and gave them to the older man.
The older gentleman began to cry and told him that he couldn’t accept such a gift from a stranger. Robert told him he had to because he had lost the receipt(收據(jù)) and couldn’t return them—a little white lie. The pants were a perfect fit, the shirt was a bit tight but he was able to keep his job.
“My wife and I tried to gather together some money last night, but we didn’t have enough to buy the clothes,” he told Robert. “It’s unbelievable to me that anybody would do such a thing for only knowing me a day!”
More unbelievable is how good it has made Robert and me feel to do this.
51. If the older man did not have the proper clothes, he would _____
A. be punishedB. be offered another job
C. put off the training classD. lose his job
52. The money which was paid for the clothes belonged to _____

B.He told a lie that the clothes didn’t fit himself.
C.He told the older man that he could save money and return it later.
D.He told the older man that he had no way to send them back.
54. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Proper clothes for a strangerB. Fight against strict rules

School Report went international when the BBC News project’s first global radio bulletin(新聞簡報) was made at Randfontein High School in South Africa.
Students from the school were joined by pupils from two other schools—Parktown High School for Girls and Impala Crescent Primary School—and went live(直播) at 14:00 local time on 3 February, 2010. BBC producers Ros Smith and Kate Riley were invited to work with the schools.
After deciding on their news topics, the students gathered vox pops from fellow students and their teachers.
Tiffany said, “We had a chance to talk to other kids from other schools. This was great because Randfontein is a place which is not known to many people and away from modern civilization.” Nomakhosi added, “Interviewing our teachers and classmates was interesting and I felt important while doing this.”
Chene commented, “My voice sounded like a whole new person. It takes some time to get used to hearing your own voice.”
Pupils, known as learners in South Africa, then worked with School Report producer Ros Smith to edit their audio(聲音的) material while others started script-writhing(寫廣播稿).
With the 14:00 deadline fast approaching, and the audio edited, the new School Reporters recorded their scripts so they could be added to the bulletin.
Ros Smith was really impressed with the students’ work. She said, “The stories they chose were an excellent mix. The final bulletin sounds really good, and they finished with 10 minutes to spare before the deadline.”

Margaret Bourke-White was one of the leading news reporters of the 20th century. But she did not write news. She told her stories with a camera. Margaret Bourke-White began her career as an industrial photographer in the early 1930s. In 1936, she accepted the American publisher Henry Luce’s invitation and went to his magazine, called Life, and later another magazine called Fortune.
In the 1930s, Margaret Bourke-White met the American writer Erskine Caldwell. They decided to produce a book about poor country people of the South. They traveled through eight states. Their book, You Have Seen Their Faces, was published in 1937. It was a great success.

We all know that birds use their feathers(羽毛) to line their nests. But have you ever heard of a bird eating its own feathers? It is a bird which lives in the water and it is called the grebe. The grebe’s feathers are silky to touch and are black or gray in color. It is usually 7 to 10 inches long and has short wings and a pointed bill(鳥嘴). It eats its own feathers and feeds them to their young ones too. And, it always prefers soft feathers, which it gets rid of throughout the year.
Scientists believe that its feather-eating habit is linked to the process in which it throws waste. The grebe has a unique excretory system. It throws out one or two balls of waste through its mouth every two days. The main food of grebe is fish. So the ball of waste has something hard to digest(消化) like fish bones and scales(魚鱗). And there are parasites(寄生蟲). It is important for the grebe to throw these parasites out. If it didn’t, they would make it sick. According to scientists, the feathers add fiber to its waste. It makes it easier to form(形成) the ball of waste and to throw it out.
Another interesting characteristic is its toes(腳趾). They are united to form a web near the base, while the rest are rounded like an umbrella. The shape of its toes helps it to swim. In fact, the grebes are excellent swimmers and they use their feet only for diving force under water.
The grebe makes its nest on floating leaves or plants and lays about two to ten eggs in it. Both the male and female grebe hatch(孵化) the eggs and take care of the young ones. The young grebes have stripes(條紋) on them.
There are 18 to 20 species of grebes living around the world, some of which are endangered.
63. What do we know about the grebe?
