高中英語語法之能否說 a parent

■英語完全可以說 a parent。

■parent 的意思是“父親”或“母親”，指父母兩人當(dāng)中的一個，所以若說 a parent，指的就是“父親”或“母親”，盡管我們在漢語翻譯時表父母表示。如：

Would you intervene if you saw a parent hit a child? 要是你看見家長打孩子，你會干預(yù)嗎?——摘自《美國當(dāng)代英語學(xué)習(xí)詞典》

A grandparent’s job is easier than a parent’s. 祖父母的任務(wù)比父母的任務(wù)輕松一些。 ——摘自《牛津英語用法指南》第二版

The death of a parent can cause long-lasting psychological damage. 父母親有一方去世都會給子女造成長久的心理傷害。——摘自《朗文當(dāng)代高級英語詞典》第四版

■若同時指父親和母親，即指父母雙親，要用復(fù)數(shù)形式parents。如：

My parents both work in education. 我父母都從事教育工作。

Children depend on their parents for food and clothing. 兒童的衣食靠父母。

The tired children trailed along behind their parents. 孩子們累了，沒精打采地跟在父母后面。

■歸納：a parent 指父親或母親，parent 指父親和母親。注意其中的“或”與“和”。
