1.How do I teach my baby to read?
If your baby is very young, under 2 years old, I recommend using large flash cards with the words written with a heavy red felt pen. Start out with ten words written on white posterboard (22"-24" in length and 4" in width) and show these words quickly to your baby three times a day for three days. After three days remove a word and add a new word. Do the same every day.

The flashcards are good because they are easy to transport around the house or to take on a vacation.

2.Where can I find a book on the subject?
The only book I have found on the subject of teaching babies to read is: How To Teach Your Baby to Read, by Glenn Doman. I thought it was an excellent book.

3.Why doesn't everyone teach their baby how to read?
Conceptually people have a hard time believing that a baby can learn to read before they can talk. If you think about the many muscles and motor activities that are involved in talking compared to the few muscles that are involved in seeing; it makes perfect sense. To learn to read, a baby just needs to be able to see. If you write large words on the posterboard the baby does not even have to see that well. The whole activity should take about 15 minutes a day.

4.Who is interested in teaching their baby how to read?
People who think "outside the box". Most of the people who are interested are the same people who populate and surf the internet and have children. Most of the computer illiterate parents believe that children should play and should not be taught how to read before they start school. When my older son was attending preschool (he was a proficient reader by the age of 3) his teachers were horrified that he could read. The exact opposite reaction that I expected.

5.What is the method used?
It is quite simple. It is based on sight reading rather than phonics. You show the word several times to the child and they recognize it as a word, rather than a collection of letters or a combination of sounds. If you are going to use this method, it is best not to teach your child the alphabet before you teach him to read. If you do he will be looking at the individual letters of the word instead of the whole word.

6. When is the best time to start teaching your baby how to read?
At birth? Well that is a little early. You should wait until your child can see, usually at about 3-6 months is a good time to start. At the beginning you'll be doing this on faith because until the child can talk, you won't really have proof that they can read. Kind of a catch 22.
