◆ occur;happen;take place

三者都表示“發(fā)生”，都是不及物動詞。

◇ happen指“偶然發(fā)生”時，主語為“事”;當(dāng)主語是“人”時，意為“碰巧”。

◇ occur 指“發(fā)生”時可與 happen 換用，但后接to sb./sth.時，兩者含義不同：happen to sb./sth. 指不好的事情發(fā)生在某人(物)身上;occur to sb./sth. 指“某種思想等呈現(xiàn)于某人的知覺中”。

◇ take place 表示“發(fā)生”，可與 happen 或occur換用，但其后面一般不接 to sb./sth.結(jié)構(gòu);指必然會發(fā)生的事情時，多用 take place;此外take place 還可表示“舉行某種活動”。如：

He happened to know the place.他碰巧知道那個地方。

When did the earthquake occur/happen? 地震是什么時候發(fā)生的?

Didn’t it occur to you to phone them about it? 你難道就沒想過給他們打個電話?

Has anything happened to him? 他出什么事了嗎?

◆ official; officer ◇ official常指政府官員，行政官員，高級職員。

如：the government officials政府官員。

◇ officer常指穿著特別制服的官員?軍官，武官等。

如：officers of state部長(職位較高的); customs officer海關(guān)人員;

railway officer乘務(wù)員; an officer of the law法官;

police officer警官。

◆ on earth;on the earth;in the earthon earth有三層含義和用法：

◇ 作“到底”或“究竟”解，置于 what，when等疑問詞之后，以加強(qiáng)問句的語氣。例如：

①What on earth is it?這到底是什么東西?

②Why on earth did you tella lie?你究竟為什么要說謊?

◇ 作“當(dāng)今”或“世界上”解，用于最高級之后，以加強(qiáng)語氣。例如：

He said，“I'm the happiest man on earth.”他說：“我是世界上最幸福的人。”

◇ 用于否定詞之后，作“一點(diǎn)兒也不”解，以加強(qiáng)否定的語氣。例如：

It's no use on earth.這一點(diǎn)兒也沒有用。

He said，“Nothing on earth can change my mind.”他說：“無論什么也不能改變我的主意。”

◇ on the earth作“在地球上”解。例如： We live on the earth.我們生活在地球上。

◇ in the earth為“在地下”之意。例如：

Many other animals dig holes in the earth.許多其他動物在地下挖洞。
